INVISIBLE MINUET

They are vaporous,
Pale shadows, roses—
Mere nothings of the lunar hour...
They come, airy, to dance
Like scattered perfumes
Among hedges and boxwoods...
In the sound of fountains weep
The rhythms within their forms...
They drift by and stir the breeze...
Pale, the wavering pomp
Of their fragile delay
Hovers like an aura at dusk...

They move in shadow’s rhythms...
Now it’s a leaf that falls,
Now a breeze that trembles
In its solemn lightness...
And so they go, dissolving
Their unique and lovely shapes,
Their forms made of all forms,
Circling through the paths,
In the garden, ghostly and cold...
They pass alone, a slender thread,
Like smoke thinning away,
In the distant and empty air,
Beneath the pale veil,
The pale lunar veil dispersed in air...
