FANCIES OF THE INTERLUDE
II
LONGING GRANTED

In hours still golden and bright,
Clorindas and Belindas, light,
Play in the days of carriages grand,
Watching the arrivals from balconies stand.
Where they hear laughter nearing,
They gaze in the distance, fearing.
But around, the evening spills,
Bewildering the air that thrills,
For the endless afternoon never returns!
And in resounding clamor, the thrill
Of adorned ardor overturns
In the drowsy air of the late day's chill.

And there are misty disenchantments,
Of the charms of old thoughts,
In the slow, saintly enclosures,
Of convent corners, prayer plots...
Sobs of endless, slow intents,
Which charm the attentive winds.
