I think near the equator is where they thrive, probably high humidity helps too.
Bulgaria is too cold in the winters too, I am afraid but still, it's free to try and hope dies last :)))

Truth is, we haven't had a pineapple for quite some time, I don't know why, probably too exotic for us, I usually don't encourage trade of fruits and vegetables from the other side of the planet, I believe that's bad for the nature in the long run. Today we got another one, though :) Great discount, the same batch I suppose, seems to be almost gone. I'll plant the second one too, so again, fingers crossed :)
