I know very well what is experienced as a consequence of an earthquake, in fact throughout my life I have already experienced several in my homeland, Chile.
In Valdivia, in southern Chile, the strongest earthquake experienced on the planet occurred in May 1960 (9.5° Richter - duration 10 min.). This earthquake changed the geography of the Earth forever. Valdivia sank 4 m below sea level and caused the eruption of the Puyehue volcano. The earthquake was felt in a large part of the southern cone and in different parts of the planet due to the tsunami that spread throughout the Pacific Ocean, reaching towns in Hawaii and Japan located thousands of kilometres away. This earthquake is followed in magnitude by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, the 1964 Alaskan earthquake and the 2011 Japanese earthquake in fourth place.
I have vivid memories of the July 1971 earthquake (7.8° Richter), it was 11 PM, and I was about to get into bed when it started, and I remember seeing how the bedroom lit up when the moonlight entered through the huge crack that occurred when the walls were broken. A curious fact is that this earthquake occurred exactly the same day but 241 years later, when a mega-earthquake occurred in the year 1730, which covered more than 2,300 km from north to south, generating tsunamis with waves of more than 8m in height, in some localities, the sea penetrated up to two kilometres inland.
I also remember the earthquake of March 1985 (8° Richter - 2 min), luckily it was Sunday, and we were at home, and I had already planned what to do in case of, because several weeks ago they were giving recommendations on the radio about how to react to an earthquake. I found it curious that they gave these recommendations with such insistence, which made us suspect that there was some evidence that it could happen even though we have always been told that earthquakes cannot be predicted. Anyway, the earthquake finally happened and I took my family out of the home to the yard, as I had planned. I still have indelible images in my memory, such as the one on our yard wall which was moving like a snake because of the earthquake. The next day there was a second earthquake of almost the same magnitude. I came to visit my sister, the streets were as if there had been a bombing in the city.
Our last earthquake in Santiago occurred in February 2010 at 3:30 AM (8.8° Richter, 4 min.). We lived in an apartment on the second floor of a building in the heart of the city, as is to be expected, we were sleeping. The earthquake was so strong that we could not sit on the bed, my wife and I agreed tacitly not to try to escape while the earthquake lasted, it made no sense to do. We held hands and remained lying down. The department moved like a ship in the middle of a sea storm, you could feel how it rose and fell again and again due to the train of seismic waves. I was glad to be with my wife at that moment since I had recently returned to Chile and while I was in Belgium one of my biggest fears was not being by her side when an earthquake occurred. Fortunately, we were together and I was able to calmly tell her that I loved her very much, in case those were our last words.
Once the earthquake finished, after a long 4 minutes we left the apartment to see if anyone needed help.
Fortunately, and as a consequence of the strict anti-seismic construction regulations that were imposed after the 1985 earthquake, both material damage and human lives were considerably small, something that unfortunately did not happen this time in Turkey and Syria.
Statistically, a ten-year cycle is estimated to have a major earthquake in Santiago, so we are already several years past and although there have been earthquakes in the surroundings, we are waiting for one to hit us again at any moment... it's just a matter of time.

Sé muy bien lo que se vive como consecuencia de un terremoto, de hecho a lo largo de mi vida ya he vivido varios en mi tierra natal, Chile.
En Valdivia, en el sur de Chile, el terremoto más fuerte experimentado en el planeta ocurrió en mayo de 1960 (9,5° Richter - duración 10 min.). Este terremoto cambió la geografía de la Tierra para siempre. Valdivia se hundió 4 m bajo el nivel del mar y provocó la erupción del volcán Puyehue. El sismo se sintió en gran parte del cono sur y en diferentes puntos del planeta debido al tsunami que se extendió por el Océano Pacífico, llegando a localidades de Hawái y Japón ubicadas a miles de kilómetros de distancia. Este terremoto es seguido en magnitud por el terremoto del Océano Índico de 2004, el terremoto de Alaska de 1964 y el terremoto de Japón de 2011 en cuarto lugar.
Tengo vívidos recuerdos del terremoto de julio de 1971 (7.8° Richter), eran las 11 de la noche, y estaba a punto de acostarme cuando empezó, y recuerdo ver como se iluminaba el dormitorio cuando la luz de la luna entraba por la enorme grieta que ocurrió cuando se rompieron las paredes. Un dato curioso es que este sismo ocurrió exactamente el mismo día pero 241 años después, cuando ocurrió un megaterremoto en el año 1730, que recorrió más de 2.300 km de norte a sur, generando tsunamis con olas de más de 8m de altura, en algunas localidades, el mar penetraba hasta dos kilómetros tierra adentro.
También recuerdo el terremoto de marzo de 1985 (8° Richter - 2 min), por suerte era domingo, y estábamos en casa, y ya tenía planeado qué hacer en caso de, porque hace varias semanas estaban dando recomendaciones sobre el radio sobre cómo reaccionar ante un terremoto. Me pareció curioso que dieran estas recomendaciones con tanta insistencia, que nos hizo sospechar que había alguna evidencia de que podía pasar a pesar de que siempre nos han dicho que los terremotos no se pueden predecir. De todos modos, finalmente ocurrió el terremoto y saqué a mi familia de la casa al patio, como lo había planeado. Todavía tengo imágenes imborrables en mi memoria, como la del muro de nuestro jardín que se movía como una serpiente a causa del terremoto. Al día siguiente hubo un segundo terremoto de casi la misma magnitud. Vine a visitar a mi hermana, las calles estaban como si hubiera habido un bombardeo en la ciudad.
Nuestro último terremoto en Santiago ocurrió en febrero de 2010 a las 3:30 AM (8.8° Richter, 4 min.). Vivíamos en un apartamento en el segundo piso de un edificio en el corazón de la ciudad, como era de esperar, estábamos durmiendo. El terremoto fue tan fuerte que no podíamos sentarnos en la cama, mi esposa y yo acordamos tácitamente no intentar escapar mientras durara el terremoto, no tenía sentido hacerlo. Nos tomamos de la mano y permanecimos acostados. El departamento se movía como un barco en medio de una tormenta marina, se podía sentir como subía y bajaba una y otra vez debido al tren de ondas sísmicas. Me alegró estar con mi esposa en ese momento ya que recién había regresado a Chile y mientras estaba en Bélgica uno de mis mayores temores era no estar a su lado cuando ocurriera un terremoto. Afortunadamente estábamos juntos y pude decirle tranquilamente que la quería mucho, por si esas eran nuestras últimas palabras.
Una vez que terminó el terremoto, después de unos largos 4 minutos salimos del departamento para ver si alguien necesitaba ayuda.
Afortunadamente, y como consecuencia de las estrictas normas antisísmicas de construcción que se impusieron tras el terremoto de 1985, tanto los daños materiales como las vidas humanas fueron considerablemente reducidos, algo que lamentablemente no sucedió esta vez en Turquía y Siria.
Estadísticamente se estima un ciclo de diez años para tener un terremoto fuerte en Santiago, así que ya llevamos varios años y aunque ha habido terremotos en los alrededores, estamos esperando que en cualquier momento nos vuelva a golpear... es sólo es cuestión de tiempo.

I have tried to make some work that reflects the drama caused by natural disasters, trying not to fall into the pamphleteering poster or the morbid exaggeration of people's suffering and I have found the enormous similarity there is with the damage left by war. So it was not easy to consider a landscape or a situation that could make a difference.
In this work, I have been concerned that the drama of natural disasters is underlying the aesthetics of the images, which invite contemplation and reflection.
As you can see, on the top left there are people and nature located on a surface in perspective that, as it gets closer, collapses as in a geometric composition as we could find in some of Escher's xylography, to end on the bottom right with what we can identify with terraces that they fall, the cement blocks are destroyed and finally chaos.
This is a preliminary work, study, which I will improve to make a final version later.
I hope you like it, but above all, I hope it motivates you to collaborate with your votes to contribute to the help we can provide to the victims in Turkey and Syria.

He intentado hacer alguna obra que refleje el drama que provocan los desastres naturales, intentando no caer en el cartel panfletario o en la exageración morbosa del sufrimiento de la gente y he encontrado la enorme similitud que hay con los daños que deja la guerra. Así que no fue fácil considerar un paisaje o una situación que pudiera marcar la diferencia.
En este trabajo me he preocupado de que el drama de los desastres naturales subyazca en la estética de las imágenes, que invitan a la contemplación y la reflexión.
Como puedes ver, arriba a la izquierda hay personas y naturaleza situadas sobre una superficie en perspectiva que, a medida que se va acercando, se derrumba como en una composición geométrica como la que podríamos encontrar en alguna xilografía de Escher, para terminar abajo a la derecha con lo que podemos identificar con terrazas que se caen, se destruyen los bloques de cemento y finalmente el caos.
Este es un trabajo preliminar, estudio, que mejoraré para hacer una versión final más adelante.
