I was sent some funds yesterday by @wakeupkitty and she encourages me to do some art with paint and canvass. I chose the acrylic paint and canvass because I want a brighter color art piece (supposed art piece). I ought to do the water color paint artwork for maybe convenience and in my opinion without any real experience in doing watercolor painting, it easier to do because for example I assume that the paint on brushes is easier to clean than using acrylic although both requires a bit of elbow grease to clean them especially between coloring different areas on the canvass.

My plan is this, buy the necessary items which I would later using the said funds and get right on doing my first piece. I will use my old laptop's stand as my easel and then paint whatever I idea would come from my thoughts but I do have an idea to put on the canvass. I plan to do it slowly and rush the whole thing unlike finishing one painting a day is inviting me for a failed work because for one thing I am not an artist and I have zero experience in doing art aside from doing it via my laptop about five years ago. So I would be guessing that my first art piece will be like a toddlers doodle after it accidentally picked-up a marker and started stroking the pen unto the house wall, so bear with me.

I don't know but I feel excited about it like I going to my class at school for the first time but with a bit of anxiety about it because its my first time, I have no coach, no teacher but only relying on the bits of ideas which Bob Ross taught and demonstrated on his videos uploaded on YouTube as he paints and finishes his art pieces within a short time frame which looks easy but in reality it is not because you have to practice.

I am quite surprised that the acrylic paints, the canvass, and the brushes are quite cheap although the brushes for example are not "big" and not made of hair but nylon, I guess that they will do the job. I will not use oil paints because I do not want to use volatile paint thinners which might cause cancer. Well I don't know if acrylic paint's fumes also causes cancer considering that I have a room with a poor ventilation. I am still contending with the smell of the paint of my bed frame up to this day and I am afraid that I might die from that acrid smell too, it sticks to my towel because I can smell it from my towel when I use the bathroom and pat my body to dry.

Just now I found an easel already, I might order that too and use it instead of the old laptop stand. Now I would have a set of 24 color acrylic paint, two sets of brushes or one if I will not order the sets with broader brushes, a few small tray to supposedly blend colors, and the paper towels.

These are the links where I would purchase the materials.

I don't know if the canvass size is big enough but I think it will suffice with its size of almost 8 inches by 1 foot because the paint amount which I will be using is just small as one tube of it is only 100mL so I have to be careful in using paint amounts so that I will not find myself lacking within the process. Anyway, the cost is relatively minimal to my surprise because I thought that the materials are expensive although I know that the brushes quality is not ideal but again it might do the job anyways. I remember Bob Ross saying not to use such brushes but brushes made out of hairs instead but maybe it is for doing oil paint artwork I'm not sure.

From the time of this writing I will transfer the funds sponsored by Miss @wakeupkitty tomorrow from PayPal to my digital debit card (no physical card) because I am afraid not to touch or transfer funds the moment it is received for the reason that PayPal is notorious of freezing funds or account for doing transfers immediately to our bank accounts because of their algorithm. I don't know if it is still a thing but I am always cautious.

It is almost instant when doing transfers to debit card in particular from PayPal which I only learned a few days ago after I transferred $4 dollars which was an amount that came from PayPal itself a few years ago. Anyway by tomorrow my order would be done and I hope to get my art work blog or maybe even video blog it too, now I need a Smartphone holder/stand as well, I am quite excited what would come out of it because I will start a new hobby which I had never done before, please pray for God to give me talent.

Do you have pencils to sketch and paper? You can try on that first. Acrylic paint just like water colour is easy to wash of the only difference is that acrylic is brighter and once dry the paint can't be wiped off like watercolour (at least that's my experience, I'm using the old water colour boxes of over 10 years old right now). I find it a bit hard because I am used to acrylic so it's not easy to paint in a different way.
By the way I use one type of brush for everything and don't care too much about what the brush is meant for. I also use a piece of the sponge (meant to scrub the pans) to paint bigger parts with.

If you have enough money, it's better to buy paper, pencils, so you can experiment and go for the bigger pots with paint like these Have a look at @almaguer, he started only a few months ago. For sure, you can develop your style and brighten up your days and the house.

P.s. if what you painted on canvas isn't right, you can paint over it. Buy a bottle of black and white extra to make the new layer and the colour you like most. I paint on a black background.

I am looking forward to seeing your first brushstrokes, no matter what you paint it's all part of the experience.

I have very similar tastes to yours; I like painting on a black background. It looks great. And although I haven't tried any paints other than acrylics recently, I vaguely remember when I used to paint with watercolors, and the feeling is not even remotely the same. Each material is a universe that, through trial and error, you could specialize in. Of the ones I've tried, I would always stick with canvas. Heavyweight paper has its own timing and characteristics, and I feel that when you use more than two layers, the magic is lost. This is not the case with canvas, which allows for many layers and textures. Regular cardstock has a different timing; I've tried some that are impossible for me to paint on.
Canvas, as you say, also has the ability to be reused, which is great.

Hi Miss @wakeupkitty, even if I have a pencil I really have no idea how to use it because I do not know what to draw or sketch for that matter. A long time ago I made a gridline to mimic the silhouette image of Kurt Cobain in black and white using a pencil on one of the drawers of our study table and put a masking tape to preserve it but I destroyed after a while which I shouldn't had to my regret.

I haven't used pencil for anything for quite a long, long time already. However I will have to see what colors which I have to use but for now I will make use of what I had purchased and use them. Thank you for all your guidance and suggestion and I hope that I can do this even though I know that the result will not be as good as I expect and want but I have some idea what to do.

Don't tear apart. We go up and down but if you have something to look back to you will see the growth but also what kind if drawings or art gits to you. The grey pemcil is meant to sketch what you might like to paint. There are plenty of videos you can watch orbsimply try to sketch or paint one of your many photos in your own way. You might surprise yourself.

I am not a great sketcher myself but I give it a try again. Who knows it helps me to other insights or look different?

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

Wow, @cryptopie, this is fantastic! I love seeing you take the plunge into the world of acrylic painting. The excitement is palpable, and your self-awareness about the learning curve is super relatable. Getting started is always the hardest part, so HUGE kudos for taking that step!

I'm really impressed with your thoughtful approach to selecting materials and your resourcefulness in using a laptop stand. And good call on avoiding those potentially harmful fumes. Safety first! I'm already picturing you channeling your inner Bob Ross and creating something uniquely you.

I'm looking forward to following your artistic journey and seeing what you create. You've got this! I've upvoted this post, and will follow so I can see your next post. Thanks for sharing this with us!
