I want to become a beekeeper! - Issue #1 - Nuances of the start.
I want to become a beekeeper! - Issue #1 - Nuances of the start.
When a person strives to do something, he goes to it in two ways, namely - quickly and slowly, deliberately.
And the business that I want to do, I'm talking about beekeeping, does not forgive haste for many reasons.
It is very difficult to do the right thing in a hurry, and it is very easy to make many mistakes at the start of this business.
I have been filtering information about this business for several years now and for me it is very relevant and interesting.
In fact, this is a detective story, a very confusing detective story with many variables and unknown facts, a lot of information like running water, and important information emerges in parts.
So, for example, I thought about which hive system to choose, and these are several types of multi-hull hives, where the bodies are built on top of each other and several types of lying hives, where the frames with honeycombs are located horizontally.
Listening to many beekeepers, I came to the conclusion that the lying hive is an anarchy, an outdated technology and it is necessary to pay attention to multi-hull hive systems, but, a couple of days ago, I crossed this out and turned my thoughts specifically to the lying hive.
The fact is that many beekeepers who undertake to teach beginners in beekeeping and offer to conduct beekeeping in multi-hull systems, are silent about an important detail, namely, that to expand the bee colony in a multi-hull hive, frames with dryness are required, dryness is wax foundation built by bees from which the already collected honey has been pumped out and dried.
A, a novice beekeeper will be able to get frames with dry bees only by the second season, or by the end of the first season, and in the first year he will only have access to frames with wax foundation, which can be used to expand bee colonies only in a horizontal hive.
I must clarify one point, when starting out, you will have to buy bee colonies, or bee packages, as they are called, and this is about four to six frames with sealed and open brood of bees, which will need to be increased by the first honey harvest by adding frames on which the queen bee will sow new brood, and the bees will bring nectar there.
It is very easy to distract your attention from the main thing, very important, and it is not easy to get out of problems, beekeepers are very reluctant to sell frames with foundation, most likely, they will refuse to sell you, since they need such frames themselves.
Therefore, I am glad that I did not make a quick decision and waited for the moment when I would have a clear understanding of what type of hive I should focus on and decide what exactly I will make them from.
There are many options and here, too, there is no need to rush :)
