PLACES OF CHILDHOOD
Places of childhood where
without words and without memory
someone, perhaps me, played
are no longer there, nor am I.
Where? Before
what mystery
in which, as in a hesitant mirror,
my face, another face, is reflected?
They sold the house, the flowers
in the garden, if I touch them, they stiffen
and grow cold, and under my steps
the roses and the memories dissolve immaterially.
The room—I did not see it
because it was my eyes:
and I did not know it,
and that was wisdom.
Now I know these things
in a way that does not belong to me,
as if I had stolen them.
The house no longer grows
around the living room,
they set the table for four
and the heart only for three.
Someone is missing,
I don’t know who,
went to get a haircut and only returned
eight days later, by then
dinner had gone cold.
And once again, I’m left alone,
in the empty bed, in the empty room.
Outside, it is night, the dogs are barking;
and I cover my head with the sheets.
