Essendo in piena stagione non ho potuto seguire alcun incontro di Wimbledon, il torneo di tennis piu' famoso al mondo.
Ho visto pero' un po' di filmati della partita di primo turno fra Alcaraz e Fognini, vinta con enorme fatica dallo spagnolo al quinto set.

Fognini ha 38 anni e' ampiamente oltre il 100esimo posto nel ranking, e' a fine carriera, e' un uomo e un padre che dalla vita ha ottenuto tutto, sposato con la bella Pennetta che gli sta' sfornando un marmocchio dietro all'altro.

Eppure, nel contesto di una stagione agonistica complicata Fognini ha fatto vedere, di fronte al numero 2 al mondo di essere ancora uno dei piu' grandi con la racchetta in mano, soprattutto di fronte a stimoli importanti.
Oggi il tennis maschile italiano vive una stagione d'oro con Sinner e altri giocatori davvero forti ma Fognini, prima di loro e quasi da solo, si e' caricato sulle spalle in tennis italiano per almeno un decennio mantenendolo su livelli importanti.

Poteva ottenere di piu' col suo talento se fosse stato meno fumantino di testa?
Forse, ma e' comunque stato numero 9 al mondo in singolare e numero 7 in doppio.
Non mi sembra poco.
Concludo con il giudizio dato da Panatta sul giocatore dopo la sfida con Alcaraz che mi trova perfettamente concorde.

" Mi sono divertito molto e quando dicono che la risposta di diritto in chop o il taglio sotto non si può più fare nel tennis così veloce di oggi mi viene da ridere. Fabio ha dimostrato che si può ancora giocare così sull’erba. Certo, la mano di Fognini ce l’hanno in due o tre nel circuito mondiale ma Fabio ha fatto vedere come si gioca a tennis per davvero e per questo gli faccio i complimenti"

Because it was the height of the season, I was unable to follow any of the Wimbledon matches, the most famous tennis tournament in the world.
I did, however, see some footage of the first round match between Alcaraz and Fognini, which the Spaniard won with great difficulty in the fifth set.

Fognini is 38 years old and is well over 100th in the rankings, he is at the end of his career, he is a man and a father who has achieved everything in life, married to the beautiful Pennetta who is producing one brat after another.

And yet, in the context of a complicated competitive season, Fognini showed, in front of the number 2 in the world, that he is still one of the greatest with a racket in his hand, especially when faced with important stimuli.
Today, Italian men's tennis is experiencing a golden age with Sinner and other really strong players, but Fognini, before them and almost alone, has carried Italian tennis on his shoulders for at least a decade, keeping it at important levels.

Could he have achieved more with his talent if he had been less hot-headed?
Maybe, but he was still number 9 in the world in singles and number 7 in doubles.
That doesn't seem like a small thing to me.
I'll conclude with Panatta's assessment of the player after the match with Alcaraz, which I completely agree with.

"I had a lot of fun and when they say that the forehand chop or undercut can no longer be done in today's fast tennis, it makes me laugh. Fabio has shown that you can still play like that on grass. Of course, only two or three people on the world circuit have Fognini's hand, but Fabio has shown how to really play tennis and for that I congratulate him"
