View from the cathedral hill to the lower town
Hey guys,
today it's not about my Italy trip like in the last post, but about a little city trip to Tallinn and other cities (coming soon) at the Baltic Sea outside Germany.
One of the most beautiful sights of Tallinn was definitely the Cathedral Hill.
To be precise, there are two large viewing platforms on Cathedral Hill. From there you have a super nice view of Tallinn and especially the old town, the view even reaches the sea.
There is also a museum, the cathedral church from the 13th century.
Halfway we passed the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is from the end of the 19th century and has colorful onion domes. Opposite to it is the neoclassical castle, which today serves as the parliament. As a castle remnant there is a 45 m high tower "Long Hermann". An Estonian state flag was placed on it.
Today, however, it should only be about the Cathedral Hill itself, on the cathedral and the other sights I'll go in another post.
Beautiful view from the cathedralWe went up to Cathedral Hill through the old gate. In front of us then stood directly the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and opposite it the Toompea Castle. It has a great baroque facade. Alone the sights that you see during the walk up the Cathedral Hill make the walk up worthwhile in any case!
Be sure to check out the north side of the castle: there's a viewing platform here. You not only have a great view over Tallinn, but also towards the "Finnish" sea. You can see ferries here, especially those coming from Helsinki, but also cruise ships.
The platform from which we had the most beautiful view was the Kohtuotsa observation deck (I also took the pictures from there).
This platform is located on the east side of the Cathedral Hill (Toompea). It is quite large and you have a great view of the medieval old town with the modern part of the city in the background (this is what makes the picture so special I think). This is probably the point from which most photos are taken, however, from here you can also see most of the towers and even the tallest, the Tallinn TV Tower. In addition, you can see the district Lasnamäe. This is characterized by many buildings / houses from the Soviet era.
When there is no corona, there are also many open stores and cafes in the summer.
Finally, we visited the city walls of Tallinn.
It is 1.9 kilometers long. The city wall is almost completely preserved. Thus, Tallinn has a very well preserved medieval fortification compared to other European cities. The complex has more than 20 defensive towers. Especially the many towers and the medieval construction give Tallinn a "romantic" ambience in my opinion, but see for yourself :)
Particularly sticks out the cannon tower "Kiek in de Kök" (Look in the kitchen) in the eye (from him I have found unfortunately no photos, but google him with pleasure). It has 6 floors and stands a bit away from the walls. Also a special mention deserves the gun turret "Dicke Margarethe". The tower is much wider than the "Kiek in de Kök". This is a good example of the development of defensive technology.
I hope you liked the post and the pictures :) See you soon!
