In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sport Climbing will include two distinct medal events: Boulder & Lead Combined and Speed.
The Boulder & Lead Combined event combines two disciplines:
- Bouldering: Climbers attempt to complete a series of short, but challenging climbing problems within a set time, without ropes.
- Lead Climbing: Climbers aim to climb as high as possible on a longer route within a given time, using ropes for safety.
These disciplines test different aspects of strength, endurance, and problem-solving, and the scores are combined to determine the final ranking. This differs from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where climbers had to compete in a combined format of Speed, Boulder, and Lead, with scores from all three disciplines determining the winner. In Paris, Speed has become its own separate event.
This change in format is designed to better align with the structure of professional climbing competitions and offer more climbers a chance at medals.
