Hallo liebe Community,
an unserem ersten Tag in Richmond machten wir uns frisch gestärkt mit amerikanischem Frühstück auf zum Kapitol Hill. Unser Holday Inn lag recht günstig, so dass wir nur ein paar Minuten zu Fuß durch die Innenstadt schlendern mussten. Und da waren wir auch schon angekommen am Kapitol Hill, der als wunderschöne Parkanlage angelegt ist.

Gleich am Eingang befindet der Bell Tower. Der Glockenturm von 1825 in ist ein historisches Wahrzeichen und wurde wurde 1825 aus Ziegeln erbaut. Er beherbergt eine Glocke, die 1832 gegossen wurde und die älteste noch existierende Glocke in Richmond ist. Der Glockenturm wurde im Laufe der Jahre mehrfach renoviert und ist in einem tollen Zustand. Er ist heute ein beliebtes Touristenziel und bietet einen tollen Blick auf die Stadt.

Ein paar meter weiter kommt man schon zu einem weiteren Highlight des Parks. Das Virginia Women's Monument in Richmond, auch bekannt als Voices from the Garden, ist ein Denkmal, das im Gedenken an die Frauen Virginias errichtet wurde, die im Laufe der 400-jährigen Geschichte des Staates eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt haben unter anderem auch die erste First Lady Martha Washington. Das Denkmal befindet sich auf dem Capitol Square vor dem Virginia State Capitol und wurde im Jahr 2020 eingeweiht. Von hier aus sieht man auch direkt die Bronze Statue von Edgar Allen Poe, einem der berühmtesten Söhne der Stadt und weltweit gefeierten Schriftsteller.

Oben auf dem Kapitol Hill angekommen befindet sich das Virginia Washington Monument, auch bekannt als "The Washington Monument", es ist eine 19 Meter hohe Bronzestatue von George Washington auf einem Marmorsockel.
Die Statue wurde 1850 vom Bildhauer Thomas Crawford geschaffen und 1858 eingeweiht. Das Denkmal gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Denkmäler Washingtons in den Vereinigten Staaten und ist ein beliebtes Touristenziel. Die Statue ist die älteste Reiterstatue Washingtons in den USA und wurde während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs von den Konföderierten beschädigt, später aber restauriert. 2020 wurde das Denkmal im Rahmen eines Sanierungsprojekts umfassend restauriert. Eines der schönsten Denkmäler, das wir auf unserer reise gesehen haben.

Hier steht auch eine Statue von Thomas J. Jackson oder besser Stonewall Jackson. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) war ein General der Konföderierten im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg. Er gilt als einer der fähigsten und innovativsten Taktiker der Geschichte und spielte eine Schlüsselrolle in zahlreichen wichtigen Schlachten. Seinen Spitznamen "Stonewall" bekam er für seine standhafte Führung in der Ersten Schlacht von Bull Run (Manassas) im Jahr 1861.
Auch das Denkmal für Barbara Johns aus dem Jahr 2021, eine Gedenktafel zu ihren Ehren und den anderen studentischen Aktivisten, die am Protest von 1951 teilgenommen haben, ist sehr interessant. Die Tafel würdigt ihren Mut und ihre Entschlossenheit im Kampf für Rassengleichheit in der Bildung.

Zu guter letzt ist hier auch das Executive Mansion, das wir aber leider nicht von innen besichtigen konnten. Es ist auch bekannt als Virginia Governor's Mansion und ist die offizielle Residenz des Gouverneurs des US-Bundesstaates Virginia. Es befindet sich auf dem Capitol Square und ist seit 1813 das Zuhause der Gouverneure und ihrer Familien. Seither war es die ständige Residenz von 57 Gouverneuren Virginias. Hier wohnten auch einige spätere Präsidenten der USA in ihrer Zeit in Richmond. Das Mansion ist sowohl ein nationales als auch ein staatliches Wahrzeichen und gilt als eines der ältesten kontinuierlich bewohnten Gouverneurshäuser in den Vereinigten Staaten.

on our first day in Richmond, we set off for Capitol Hill, refreshed with an American breakfast. Our Holiday Inn was conveniently located, so we only had to stroll through the city center for a few minutes. And then we arrived at Capitol Hill, which is a beautiful park.

Right at the entrance is the Bell Tower. The bell tower from 1825 is a historical landmark and was built from brick in 1825. It houses a bell that was cast in 1832 and is the oldest bell still in existence in Richmond. The bell tower has been renovated several times over the years and is in great condition. It is now a popular tourist destination and offers a great view of the city.

A few meters further on you come to another highlight of the park. The Virginia Women's Monument in Richmond, also known as Voices from the Garden, is a monument erected in memory of the women of Virginia who have played a significant role in the state's 400-year history, including the first First Lady Martha Washington. He is considered one of the most capable and innovative tacticians in history and played a key role in numerous important battles. He got his nickname "Stonewall" for his steadfast leadership at the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) in 1861.
The 2021 memorial to Barbara Johns, a plaque in her honor and the other student activists who took part in the 1951 protest, is also very interesting. The plaque honors their courage and determination in the fight for racial equality in education.

Last but not least, there is the Executive Mansion, which we unfortunately were not able to visit from the inside. It is also known as the Virginia Governor's Mansion and is the official residence of the governor of the US state of Virginia. It is located on Capitol Square and has been the home of the governors and their families since 1813. Since then, it has been the permanent residence of 57 governors of Virginia. Several later presidents of the USA also lived here during their time in Richmond. The mansion is both a national and state landmark and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited governor's houses in the United States.
