Once upon a time, in a village situated towards the eastern part of Nigeria named Umenze, lived an old witch named Adaku all by herself. Identified as a witch in the village nobody wanted to associate with her and she lived isolated away from other villagers. Tired of the maltreatment received from the villagers and with the lonely life she was living, Adaku decided to pay the people of Umenze for their wickedness towards her.
On a sunny afternoon in a day picked by the villagers to all come together to wash at the river, as the children were playing suddenly there appeared a maidan from the far end, she was clothed in golden apparel and her skin shined like the sun, she carried with her a basket of dirty cloth as she came close to the stream the women stood in awe at her beauty and they could not help but admire her. Words soon spread across the village of the beautiful lady who now lives in the village.
The king got to know about it and decided to summon her to see for himself. Adaku was summoned to the palace when she got there, the king could not believe his eyes as standing before him was the most beautiful woman he had ever since, immediately he concluded that his son the crown prince will marry her. He asked her about her background and he discovered that she was from his village but lived all her life in her maternal home with her family, she only came back to Umenze to learn more about her father's origin.
When the prince saw her, he feel deeply inlove with her words soon spread abroad that the prince was going to marry the beautiful maiden. On the morning of the wedding it was discovered that the prince was dead. The news shock everyone within the palace because no one could understand how it happened or who could have killed the prince. While the uproar was on going the beautiful maiden came to the palace revealed herself to be Adaku the witch everyone neglected she confessed killing the prince and showed no remorse about it. She blamed the people for neglecting her as all she used her powers to do was protect the village but she was neglected and rejected. Immediately she was done speaking she fell down and died.
It was a sorrowful day for the entire community as every mourned the prince and a feeling of regret consumed the entire village for how they treated Adaku resulting to the death of the prince.
