Vesak procession (වෙසක් පෙරහැර )

Greetings everyone,

I hope you are all well. Today I am going to share with you some pictures and a video of a procession. This is the procession organized by our village temple for Vesak Poya last month.

The procession consisted of several different elements, and the first to arrive in the procession were small children carrying flower bicycles. Then came the whippersnappers. This was a daytime procession that took place during the day.

You can see children riding bicycles and inwhippersnappers these two pictures.

Following the flower bicycles and whips are women and other children carrying national flags and Buddhist flags. This is also a fundamental part of a procession.

(In these three pictures, you can see the chariot carrying the Buddha statue and the chariots carrying the statues of gods representing the four devals.)

Then come the dance groups with various dance elements. If we talk about the dance elements in a perahera, those dance elements can be described as dance elements based on Sinhala culture. They mainly include Kulu dance, Molgas dance, Li Keli dance, Savaram dance and Ves dance.

In addition, there are various dances belonging to the low country tradition. You can see what those dance elements are from the pictures I have shared.

You may notice that not only women but also men perform dances for the procession. In particular, dance elements such as Kavadi dance, false leg dance, mask dance, ves dance, and cane dance are performed by
men.

Another important aspect of a procession is the carriage of elephants. In this, the relic casket is carried by a special elephant.
