Hi friends, Wish you a happy Pongal and Makar Sangranti!!

My son is studying at Kendriya Vidyalaya School. Yesterday our traditional festival Pongal was celebrated in their school. As per the intention of students must know about the tradition and culture.

Here I want to tell you about what Pongal is. "Pongal" is one of the harvest festivals celebrated in India. In every part of India, this harvest festival is celebrated with different names. In Punjab it is Vaisakhi, in Gujarat it is Uttaran, in Uttar Pradesh it is Magar sangranthi and in Tamil Nadu it is Pongal.

Since we are in Tamil Nadu, we celebrate Pongal festival. This festival is celebrated for five days. The first day is Bhogi festival, the second day is Pongal festival, the third day is Mattupongal or Uzhavaar Thirunal, the fourth day is Kanum Pongal, and the fifth day is Manjal Neerattu.

We started celebrating this festival yesterday. Since my son's school celebrated it yesterday, during this event, the children danced our traditional dances like Oyilattam, Kavadiattam, Gummi, and Potra dances. My son also wore traditional costume and participated in a dance program. Their teacher shared the video and photos of it with us. We enjoyed watching it, and I'm very happy to share it with you here.

The children were dressed in our traditional clothes. The girls wore traditional clothes like silk skirts, silk shirts and traditional accessories. The boys wore traditional clothes like vests and shirts. They were very beautiful to look at and were a reminder of our tradition.

The students have organized the entire event, their teachers told us, and they have been very enthusiastic about the event, including making rangoli, playing musical instruments, and making pongal.

After the festival, a holiday was declared for everyone. All the students were happy as five consecutive days of holiday were declared because they were very happy that we were going to celebrate five days of various festivals.

Happy Pongal to all of you; may happiness spread in your homes as Pongal spreads.

Note: Since the parents are not allowed for this function, we did not go to school. These photos and videos were shared with us by the teachers through WhatsApp so I have downloaded them from there and shared them here.

💚THANK YOU 💚

Dear @jyoti-thelight (Ma'am) Thank you for sharing the description of the Pongal festival and your son's experience of celebrating it in school. It is truly a beautiful festival and your description shows how inspiring and joyful it is. The students get the opportunity to learn about their heritage and culture through the Pongal celebrations. It is truly a valuable learning experience.

Happy Pongal, and may the joy of Pongal spread in your home as well.
