Makar Sankranti, celebrated nationwide on January 14, is observed with great enthusiasm. The festival is known for kite flying, with the sky filled with colorful kites. Every 12 years, Kumbh Mela is organized, attracting millions to Prayagraj for a holy dip in the confluence of Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati. This year it is Maha Kumbh celebrated after 144 years. Adi Shankar aara describes how gods and demons fought over the sacred Port of Amrit called the ratna of Samudra Manthan.

It is widely believed that Lord Vishnu, disguised as the enchantress Mohini, whisked the Kumbh (pot of nectar) out of the crust of the demons who had tried to claim it metaphorically. the Mahakumbh Mela is a pilgrimage that represents the human body and the spiritual essence of every person. The sacred pot, or Kumbh, symbolizes the body, and the nectar, or Amrita, symbolizes the spiritual energy within.

The Maha Kumbh is one of Hinduism's most significant and holy events, held once every 12 years in Prayag Raj, Uttar Pradesh. About one million foreign tourists are expected including Steve Jobs' Wife Laurene Powell who falls Sick on the second day of Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj.

People enjoy sweets made of sesame (til) and jaggery on this day. In Karnataka, the tradition of exchanging delicacies on Makar Sankranti is called Ellu Birodhu. Makar Sankranti is celebrated by different names across India: Pongal in South India, Magh Bihu in Assam, Poush Sankranti in Bengal and Khichdi in Bihar.

The festival is dedicated to the Sun God, who sustains life with heat and light. We express our gratitude to the ritualistic offerings of the gifts of nature to elements of nature and to those around us before we indulge in self-consumption.

From Makar Sankranti, winter fades, and days start becoming longer. The festival marks the beginning of India's harvest season.
