CELEBRATING THE NEW YAM FESTIVAL IS FAMOUS IN MY COUNTRY

INTRODUCTION

Every season that comes in the year, is marked with a particular kind of event. Starting from january to december is marked out for one event or the other.
In my country, there so much iconic events celebrated for various reasons or purposes. Such famous festivals or events takes place in order to transfer historical knowledge to the younger generation.

In my country, Some traditions require that some festivals are kept sacrosanct to preserve their culture. So come rain come shine, such events are celebrated by a people marked by the same origin. In any part of the world that these people of the same origin resides, such events must be celebrated.

Now in this contest, I bring forward tio everyone, the Most Famous Festival Of My Country called: The New Yam Festival.

The new yam festival has been in existence before I was even born. Even most of our great grand fathers were not yet born when the festival became a tradition to be kept and celebrated. The new yam festival is usually celebrated as soon as so the harvesting of yams begin. Harvesting of yams begins in some places from August and runs through late November.

As the yams are beginning to be harvesyed, we start to garther them into the barns. The men do the harvesting while the women do the garthering.

After gathering the yams into the barns, they would be seperated. Some would reserved for sale, some would be reserved for cooking on the day of the celebration, some would be reserved for replanting, and others would be reserved food for the family.

When all the seperations has been made, the council elders would hold elders meeting. On the elders' meeting, they would discuss about the date to be chosen to celebrate the new yam festival. They would also discuss other important isssues affecting their various communities. After their deliberations and a daye is chosen for the celebration of the new yam festival, a general meeting would be held to inform everyone about it and for the people to prepare themselves for the event. A date would be given when the festival would hold.

As the date is now fixed, the preparations begin fully. The village square would be agog and men and women would dress in their colorful traditional attires to celebrate the new yam festival.

On the day of the new yam festival, a good number of yams that will satisfy everyone, would be cooked. The yams would be cooked both as yam pepper soup or as yam porage. Women that would cook the food would selected from different families across the community.

The village square would be decorated and the council elders, the chiefs, the kings, the oracles, and queens, the guards, all would be sited at the square.

The day would also feature the masqurades dancing. The oracle with all the village council elders would walk around the villages thanking their gods for a fruitful and bountiful yam harvest.

After walking round the villages, the women would now dish out the yam for everyone to eat and get satisfied. The traditional music players would also be there to play the music to entertain everyone.

A high point of the event is the conferment of chieftaincy title to outstanding yam farmers in from different villages. These yam famers plants the yams in several thousands and harvests it also in several thousands. So on that very day of celebrating the new yam festival, these farmers would be called out and then they would be confered with the traditional title of EZEJI of the land. The title means the king of yam farmers.

The conferment of the title ends the event and everyone go home to continue entertaining their visitors. Some of the visitors may be given some tubbers of yams as a gift to celebrate the new yam festival.
