Focusing On Purpose Over Popularity

in Project HOPE11 hours ago

A few days back, I was going through my timeline on social media and I came across a particular influencer. What drew my attention was the video that she posted, where someone came to her for help. Instead of helping, she took out her camera, started videoing, and even made jest of the person in need, after which she drove off. It was a very saddening view to watch. For her, all that matters was to get social media impressions, and maybe to increase her views, but not creating impact in humanity. It is so sad that, at this point in time, a lot of people are only concerned about popularity, especially on social media, while creating zero impact and purpose. What they forget is that at the end of the day, what will matter is what you have done to help humanity, not how popular you are.

One of the things that I have understood in life is that what really matters is not what you have but how you have used what you have to create impact and make humanity better. True fulfilment is not gotten by your possession, but by the sense of purpose you have to pursue after the betterment of humankind. I have a friend that, each time you come in contact with him, there will be something to gain from him. It is not that he is the richest in the neighbourhood, but he has a heart that is willing to distribute. Adorably, he never lacks help and he is also fulfilled in life. All these he do without sounding it at the top of the mountains so that everyone would see his good acts.

There are some people that, if they do something for you, the entire world would hear it, so that they will use you to gain popularity or maybe to make people to like them. True purpose is not a function of being liked by everyone but by creating an influence and an impact in people. If no one has something good to remember you for when you are gone, then you did not do something worthwhile with your presence. There is a reason you exist, and of course, there is a reason you are in an environment, so that you will create positive impact. Being focused on popularity might just give you temporary applause from people, but where the true fulfilment lies is in what your memory would be remembered for.

While popularity may be temporary because it gives a feeling of momentary pleasure, it may not last because it is not built on firm foundation, but purpose is fulfilling and it lasts. It is your purpose that will make you to wake up in the morning with zeal and passion, with the knowledge that you are working for something far bigger than just you - humanity. Popularity may just make you to continually seek for validation from people, but purpose focuses on value, mutual respect, helping people and making them feel better. You are here to add something good to people, and if you are not doing it, then you need to realign yourself.

There is no feeling as bad as after you have lived for so long, maybe in a neighborhood, and you discover that all you did was to seek for validation and impression from people without really adding value. Sometimes, you just need to take some moments and then ask yourself the sincere question about what you will be remembered for, or the impact that someone can point to that you created when you are gone. Just to let you know; people's opinion about you can change so quickly than you can even imagine. People can praise you today and tomorrow, they may turn their backs against you and criticise you. But the mark you leave behind will be permanent.

If you are blessed in your field of endeavour, the next thing to do is to bless others. If you rise, then help lift others to rise. If you have achieved one form of success or the other, then mentor others to become successful too. Whatever you have and with what you have achieved, even right from where you are, there are many things that you can do to make humanity better - this is part of the purposes you are to fulfill as human.
