A group of students from the Yachay Experimental Technological Research University in Ecuador, better known as Yachay Tech, have created a homemade device that improves the efficiency of solar panels without the need for complex mechanisms, simply by placing the solar panel under a sphere of water. .

The idea of these students, brilliant as well as simple, is to use a plastic water bottle taken from the garbage filled with normal water, under which the solar panel is installed so that the bottle with water acts as a magnifying glass, intensifying the sunlight that falls on the panel as well as concentrating it on a point.

La idea de estos estudiantes, brillante a la par que sencilla, consiste en utilizar una botella de agua de plástico sacada de la basura llena de agua normal, bajo la que se instala el panel solar de forma que la botella con agua actúa como una lupa, intensificando la luz solar que incide sobre el panel además de concentrarla en un punto.

According to experts, the efficiency of solar panels depends on the angle of incidence of the Sun's rays, reaching the maximum when it hits at an angle of 90º, which only occurs at a specific time of day. With this system that concentrates the rays, it will be possible to maintain that angle of incidence permanently, which significantly increases efficiency.

Según los expertos la eficiencia de los paneles solares depende del ángulo de incidencia de los rayos del Sol, alcanzando el máximo cuando incide con un ángulo de 90 º que solo ocurre en un momento puntual del día, con este sistema que concentra los rayos se podrá mantener ese ángulo de incidencia permanentemente, lo que incrementa sensiblemente la eficiencia.

The system also includes a portable external battery to store the energy obtained with the Energy Ball, so it would be very useful to bring electricity to people who live in remote areas and rural environments where it is very expensive to assemble the necessary infrastructures, all with a really affordable cost.

El sistema incluye además una batería externa portátil para almacenar la energía obtenida con el Energy Ball, por lo que sería muy útil para llevar la electricidad a personas que habitan en zonas remotas y entornos rurales donde resulta muy costoso montar las infraestructuras necesarias, todo ello con un coste realmente asequible.

As you can see in the photo, the prototype is really small and still produces enough energy to charge a mobile phone or turn on a light bulb. From now on, all that remains is to scale the device up to a ratio of size and performance that makes it really efficient for the population.

Como podéis apreciar en la fotografía, el prototipo es realmente pequeño y aun así produce la suficiente energía pare cargar un teléfono móvil o encender una bombilla. A partir de ahora solo queda ir escalando el dispositivo hasta conseguir una relación de tamaño y prestaciones que lo haga realmente eficiente para la población.
