I will be going a bit more in-depth on the different effective ways to improve smartphone photography... In this post, i will be focusing on a few ways such as lighting, using tripods, steadicam, stabilizers etc, composition and creativity...

Lighting

Whether you are shooting with a proper camera or a smartphone, lighting is key… lighting is one of the most important elements of quality photography. It is such a big topic to cover… and a lot of times people who arent professionals at photography tend to not understand how important lighting is in photography and video is concerned… some think the quality of the photo or video is based on the quality of the phone or camera… While this is somewhat correct, however, it is not totally correct as you can achieve great results with great lighting and cheap camera than you would with expensive camera and poor lighting.

Lighting is even more important when shooting with smartphones because the smartphone camera sensors and lenses aren’t up to the level of proper cameras at least for now… some of the cons of smartphone cameras is the noisy or poor picture/video quality in low light conditions or poor lighting conditions. This is where some high end cameras excel… but unfortunately smartphones are not yet on the level of the top cameras when it comes to sensor capabilities. That is not to say that there aren’t smartphones with the ability to produce quality image and videos in low light conditions, of course there are but those smartphones are not affordable and it would not be smart to buy such smartphones at expensive prices just for shooting photos and videos instead of investing that money on a quality camera that would probably be in the same price range.

Understanding lighting is key for quality photos and videos. When it comes to lighting for photography and videography, there are three main types; key light, fill light, and backlight… This setup is basically known as 3-point lighting. The keylight is the brightest and primary source of light in this setup and is used mainly light the subject. The fill light is does what its name says, it is used to as a fill to fill the shadows created by the key light on the subject. The backlight is self-explanatory as well, as it is used specifically for backlighting the subject. These 3-point lighting setup is the basics for creating a professional look and a quality photo and video.

Tripods, steadicam, stabilizers etc…

These are very important gears to have to achieve steady and smooth shots when recording videos. This is a great way to drastically improve smartphone photography and videography. We all know that most smartphones don’t have the ability to stabilize shots or shoot smooth videos when shooting handheld, so with the help of gears such as tripods, steadicams, stabilizers etc, small business owners can shoot quality videos of their products or services, or videos of themselves talking about their products or services using a tripod and proper lighting. Shaky videos and smartphone camera recordings don’t go hand in hand and look very amateurish and unprofessional. Steady and smooth shots is a great step in ensuring that the flaws of smartphone cameras is significantly reduced… combine that with the other ways I will be talking about in this post, then you will be able to achieve great and stunning results with just your smartphone camera.

Composition

Understanding composition is also very important when it comes to shooting quality photos and videos. Proper composition is one of the factors that separates a professional and quality photo and video from a poor and amateurish photo and video… composition is basically how elements in a photo or video are arranged that is aesthetically pleasing and to achieve a great visual look. When it comes to composition, there are a number of principles that is used for a good composition; Simplicity, Symmetrical balance, Asymmetrical balance, Radial balance, Rule of thirds, Leading lines, Golden Ratio, Framing… However, as a small business owner that wants to improve your smartphone photography, you don’t need to worry too much about understanding all the types of compositions – only 1 or 2 is good for shooting quality photos and videos. Rules of thirds is a very powerful composition type that can help you achieve an aesthetically pleasing photo or video. Understanding only this composition type is enough and can drastically improve your smartphone photography.

Be creative

I decided to conclude this post with “be creative” because creativity is key for getting attention of your viewers and target audience. Because you are using a smartphone to shoot photos or videos doesn’t mean you don’t need to be creative… in fact, that is when you need to be creative the most because you would make up for the smartphone camera flaws and cons with creativity that would attract the attention of your target audience. A creative photo or video would most likely attract attention than just a regular normal photo or video. You don’t need to go overboard with creativity… sometimes less is more and sometimes more is needed to be more… you just need to find a balance. Depending on the purpose of your photo or video, the more creative your photo or video looks, the more attention it will most likely get… and the more attention your photo or video receives, the more attention your small business would most likely get… and the more attention your small business receives, the more sales you are most likely to make.
