Types of plagiarism
According to e-learners, there are eight types of plagiarism. They are; self or Auto plagiarism, direct plagiarism, complete plagiarism, source- based plagiarism, paraphrasing plagiarism, inaccurate authorship, mosaic plagiarism and accidental plagiarism.
Self or Auto plagiarism. This occurrs when one use a whole or significant part of his or her previous published work. This is often found among great researchers and authors. Source
Direct plagiarism. This occurs when one copy the direct vocabularies used by another without quotation and referencing. By this, the exact words of the original author are copied by another and submitted by a different person.Source
Complete plagiarism. This is the most severe form of plagiarism. It occurs when one picks a whole published research or composition by another and resubmit it in his name.
SourceSource-based plagiarism. This occurs when someone cite the wrong source or a source that doesn't exist.source
This could also occur when obtain data or information from two similar sources but decided to cite the major one while ignoring the minor sources. Eg. When one obtained information from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Municipal tax office which is a sub- unit of the GRA and referencing the GRA while ignoring the Municipal tax office.
It could also be viewed in terms of primary and secondary sources.sourceParaphrasing plagiarism. "It involves the use of someone else's work with some minor changes and using it as one's own"source.
This include maintaining the same ideas and using different choice of vocabularies.
SourceInaccurate authorship. This can occur in two different ways;
This first is when one helps in the research work but does not get any form of credit for that.
The other is when one is given credit without participating in the research or work.SourceMosaic plagiarism. "Mosaic plagiarism may be more difficult to detect because it interlays someone else's phrases or text within it own research".source
Accidental plagiarism. This may occur due to mistakes or unintentional paraphrasing of another person's work.source Usually, it be captured as a paraphrased phrase or sentence but the purpose of the writings may differ.
How To avoid plagiarism.
. The best way is to study the subject matter and do an original work.
. Cite all borrowed thoughts, ideas, images, video.Source
. Cite all borrowed lessons used from videos.
. Cite all paraphrased phrases, clauses and sentences.Source
. Put all quotation marks for all quotes from phrases, clauses, sentences, music and videos.Source
. Cite all borrowed music.
. check and revise all plagiarized work before submitting for assessment or to any official platform especially steemit.com.
