BASIC SECURITY ON STEEM

1. The first thing to do is to secure your account. You have to write down your master/owner keys down on a piece of paper, and keep the paper in a safe, secure place preferably print it out and keep in a secure file.

1. You should never at any cause use your Master/Owner key when logging in to Steemit. Login with your Posting Key each time you want to access your account. Be security conscious. Steemit does not recommend you to share your password or keys with any third party site.

1. Be very careful with your Master Password because that is the only key used to get all keys on your account, including the Owner Key. If you are careless with it and someone else access it, they can STEAL your account and all the tokens in it, so treasure it.

MY DIFFERENT KEYS:

Posting Key

The Posting key allows you to post, comment, edit, vote, resteem, and follow or mute other accounts. Because it is often used to log in every day, your password or key might be compromised but Steemit has created a limited posting key to restrict the damage that a compromised account key would cause.

Active Key

The active key is used for more sensitive tasks like transferring funds, power up/down transactions, converting Steem Dollars, voting for witnesses, updating profile details and avatar, and placing a market order.

Owner Key

This is my personal key and its needed only on demand. Owner Key is the most powerful key because it can change any key of an account, including the owner key. The best option is to store and keep it offline, should your account be compromised or is having issues, you can recover it with this key.

Memo Key

This key is used for encrypting (converting the original information like plaintext into an alternative form) and decrypting memos when transferring funds. In order to encrypt a memo, use the pound/# sign before it.

Loss of Password/keys:

There is no way to recover your account if you lose your password or owner key! Its dead. Because of the true value of your account, its very very important to keep it safe where you will not lose it.

It is strongly recommended and advised that you store an offline copy of your Password somewhere safe in case of a hard drive failure, loss of device or other calamities. Consider digital offline storage, such as an external disk or flash drive, as well as printed paper. Use a safe deposit box for best redundancy in case of failure in other components.

What is the different between Master Password and Owner Key?

Master Password is used to generate all the other keys e.g Posting key, Active key, Memo key etc. Master Password is used when you are going through the account recovery, in which case you should be retrieving the Master Password from your safe storage. It is the password you get upon signing up.

These key is not an everyday use key. Keep it safe should incase your account is lost.

The Owner Key is generated by the Master Password. It is very useful when your account is compromised or having issues, you can recover it with this key.

Yes I have. Shortly after my Page was set up, my keys were sent to me. I have already save it on a drive and I will print it out and file it also.
