🏵️THE DIARY GAME 🏵️

Eid means joy. Every Eid brings happiness to the Muslim community. This year’s Eid was filled with great joy. Since all workplaces and schools were closed before Eid, everyone came home. So, we friends decided to go on a picnic before Eid. Because after Eid, everyone becomes busy, and once the holidays are over, they all return to their respective places. In that way, we never get to arrange a picnic.

As planned, we started collecting money for the picnic. Only a few people gave money at the beginning. I paid the rest from my pocket, and we went to the market to shop for the picnic. First, we went to the grocery store. There we dropped off our bags and handed over a list of the items we needed. Then we went to one of our friends who works at a mango shop. Since it was the day before Eid, he was very busy with work. Still, we insisted he join the picnic. He assured us that no matter what, he would be there. He promised us that he would definitely come.

Meanwhile, one of our friends had returned from Saudi Arabia after two years. Today, we were all going to meet him through this picnic. In the midst of all this, something funny happened — we suddenly found out that today was his birthday! Without telling him, we bought a cake and wrote a funny name on it. We named him “Kuddus Bayati,” which made everyone laugh. We had the name beautifully written on the cake and then headed toward our picnic spot. We kept the cake aside for a surprise.

After that, we took all the groceries and went to the picnic spot. The very first task there was to set up a stove, where we would cook our meal. The next job was to collect firewood. Shahid and Naeem were busy making the stove, and I went with Mukhtar to his house to bring cooking spices and a lamp. We brought everything we needed from his house.

Everything was finally ready. Before we started cooking, we all decided to surprise our friend. We all knew it was his birthday today, but we hadn’t told him that we planned to wish him. So, when we suddenly brought the cake in front of him, he was completely surprised. Then, everyone stood around him with the cake and took photos together. After the photos, we all fed him pieces of cake one by one. This was the first time we celebrated a friend’s birthday like this. It was a really fun and joyful experience.

After that, we borrowed a machete from a nearby house. We decided to pick some palm fruits (tals) from a nearby tree to eat. One of our friends, who’s great at climbing trees, volunteered to climb up. He climbed the tree and picked all the palm fruits from it. We carried them on our shoulders and brought them to our picnic spot. When all the palm fruits were gathered in one place, they looked amazing. It was going to be our first time eating fresh palm fruits of the season. Honestly speaking, we had never eaten palm fruits directly picked from the tree before. This was our first experience. Picnics like this are what bring true happiness.

Afterward, we began our cooking in full swing. Our first target was to cook khichuri (spiced rice and lentils). Once the khichuri was done, we planned to cook meat. Babu, Naeem, and Saheb started cooking the khichuri together beautifully. Meanwhile, the rest of us were enjoying the palm fruits. Once the khichuri was done, the responsibility of cooking the meat fell upon me. I’m very good at cooking meat. In all the previous picnics, I used to cook the meat, and everyone praised it a lot. So this time as well, everyone insisted that I cook the meat. At their request, I took on the responsibility and started cooking the meat carefully and skillfully.

While I was cooking the meat, I noticed everyone lying around and chatting. Sharing conversations like this, all together, brings so much joy. It’s a kind of happiness we share through these picnics. One more thing I’d like to mention—our picnics are always very simple. We don’t bring any fancy lunch boxes or setups. Our picnics are filled with stories, laughter, jokes, and playful teasing. That’s what makes our picnics so different from others. And whenever we all come home together, we make sure to organize a picnic like this.

Eventually, my cooking was done. By the time it finished, it was quite late and everyone was really hungry. So, we all sat down in rows with our plates. Shahed, Mukhtar, and Babu were serving us food. The bhuna khichuri with duck meat turned out to be absolutely delicious—this was one amazing picnic. Everyone ate heartily and with joy.

Above all, spending time like this with friends—chatting, laughing, and enjoying—felt truly wonderful. This kind of gathering on the day before Eid only made the joy of Eid even greater. It felt like a pre-Eid celebration of its own. Wishing everyone a very happy Eid in advance. May those who came home for Eid celebrate it with peace and happiness—this is my prayer for all.
