Hello everyone On this occasion I want to participate in a contest held by @khursheedanwar
about Contest alert//Dementia
here is my entry
Dementia is a broad term used in describing a decline of cognitive skills in a person that interferes with a normal life. The condition itself is not disease, but rather a constellation of diseases that hit the brain–almost all leading to dementia, but with Alzheimer's being the number one.
Dementia Symptoms
Symptoms of dementia first appear as itself mild and gradually worsens over the years. The symptoms mainly are:
Memory: Cannot remember newly acquired information and fails to names people close to you or the location on objects.
Communication breakdown: Trouble in formulating your thoughts while speaking or understanding conversations.
Confusion â Difficulty knowing what day/today is, where you are and sometimes even what is happening.
Emotional/Behavior Change: Reasons for being easily irritated, anxious or depressed may not be very clear.
Daily tasks: Problems with planning or doing everyday things such as cooking, paying bills.
Causes of Dementia
Brain cells are damaged, which in turn disrupts their communication with each other as in the case of dementia. The causes can differ for each dementia type, for example:
Alzheimer's disease: The most common one where there is abnormal protein buildup in the brain
Vascular dementia is due to vascular injuries to the brain, usually by the stroke.
Dementia of Lewy bodies: Characterized by an accumulation of abnormal proteins known as Lewy bodies.
Other forms of dementia, frontotemporal dementia — caused by injury to the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain that deal personality, emotion forcous..
Treatment and Care
At this moment, there are no cure for Dementia. Still, medication can help to slow progression and enhance quality of life in the affected persons. Some examples are:
Pharmacologic: Medications such as donepezil, rivastigmine or memantine may help reduce symptoms in certain dementias
Cognitive therapy: Brain exercises to increase memory and other cognitive functions
Non-drug interventions: Providing a comforting environment and personalised routines/connecting emotionally with the patient.
Changes in lifestyle: Regular physical exercise, diet and enough sleep helps to preserve brain health
Families and caregivers are key to doing well with people who have dementia. They greatly improve the quality of your life and emotional support is necessary as well. Seek medical attention immediately if you or a relative showing the symptom of dementia.
