My Relationship with Sleep

Honestly, sleep and I have this kind of love-hate relationship. On some days, I feel like I can’t get enough of it, and on other days, it feels like sleep just doesn’t rate me at all. But overall, I enjoy sleeping, and when I get it well, it feels like gold.

Let me just start by saying I usually get around 6 to 7 hours of sleep each night. Is it enough? Well, it depends. Sometimes I wake up feeling sharp and refreshed like I can carry the world on my head. Other times, even after 7 hours, I still feel like going back to bed. Maybe my body is trying to tell me something. But to be honest, on most nights, I know I need more. I feel like my body would prefer something like 8 or 9 hours to fully reset, but life no gree me.

Funny enough, my best sleep period is actually in the early hours of the morning, from around 9 am to 1 pm. That’s when my body naturally settles into deep sleep, and I can sleep without any wahala if no one disturbs me. That time of the day just feels like my own personal sleep paradise. Sadly, life doesn't always allow that luxury.

Speaking of disturbance, noise is my number one enemy when it comes to sleep. I don’t like being woken up by unnecessary sounds or people tapping me for things that are not even serious. It irritates me honestly. Like, why wake me just to ask me something you can figure out yourself? Or why raise your voice near someone who is obviously sleeping? It’s the quickest way to ruin my mood for the entire day.

I don’t really have a strict sleep routine like those people who must read a book or meditate before they can sleep. But I do try to avoid using my phone too much when I know I want to sleep. Scrolling and watching videos can waste my time and delay my sleep. Sometimes sha, I still fall into that trap, especially when I see something interesting online. Apart from that, I don’t do anything special before bed. No candles, no yoga, nothing fancy. I just sleep when my body says it's time.

What I’ve noticed is that when I don’t get enough sleep, it messes up my whole system. I become cranky, tired, slow, and everything starts annoying me. Even my body will just be heavy like I’m carrying bag of cement. My brain won’t function well, and I start forgetting simple things. That’s how serious sleep is. Lack of it can even cause serious health issues like headaches, high blood pressure, and stress overload if it continues for long.

But when I sleep well, oh God, it’s a blessing. I wake up happy, refreshed, and ready to take on the day. I have more energy, I think faster, I can focus better, and even my skin seems to glow more (no jokes). Sleep is literally like medicine. It helps repair our body and gives us new strength.

So I’ve come to realize that sleep is not something to joke with. Even if life is busy, we need to find a way to rest well. Because if your body breaks down, all those things you’re chasing will have to wait.

That’s basically my relationship with sleep sometimes I manage it well, sometimes I don’t. But either way, I know its value, and I’m learning to give it more attention.
