The spleen happens to be one of the most vital organs in the human abdomen and it's situated at the upper region of the abdomen. It lies very close to the stomach. Among it numerous roles include; the filtration of blood, recycling of old red blood cells as well as supporting the immune system through the manufacturing of white blood cells and antibodies.
Despites this numerous and vital functions, the spleen is most times given little or no attention which inturns leads to the malfunctioning of the spleen. This malfunctioning is always as a result of various spleen diseases which bring significant and traumatic health issues to an individual.

Though there are numerous spleen diseases, this work intends to treat just the common ones. Among the common ones include;
Enlarged Spleen: This condition is also known as enlarged Spleen. The human spleen has a standard size and a condition where the spleen grows beyond its normal size due to several factors ranging from infections, liver disease, cancer of the blood among others. The symptoms of enlarged spleen are numerous and there include; anemia, pains and fullness in the abdomen etc
Broken Spleen: This is an abnormal health condition which result from a serious hit on the tummy. Ruptured Spleen in most cases may leads to any of the following; internal bleeding, severe pains in the upper abdomen, dizziness and low blood pressure. With this, it is always an emergency medical issue.
Sickle Cell Disease and Other Blood Disorders this conditions which affects how blood cells move through the spleen. This in most cases leads to the enlargement of the spleen thus, resulting in an emergency medical attention.
Infections (e.g., Mononucleosis and Tuberculosis): Infections are mostly the function of several bacterial, viral and parasites warring against the spleen. This leads to the malfunctioning and inflammation of the spleen Among this virus is the Epstein-Barr virus which causes Mononucleosis.
Hyperspienism this is a situation in which the spleen becomes highly overactive destroying so many blood cells this leading to a condition known as anemia, low platelets count and even low white blood cells count. In most cases, this can be linked to liver disease or immune disorders.
Spleen Cancer (Lymphoma or leukemia-related spleen issues) though spleen Cancer is very rare, this condition may arise due to blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma thus leading to the enlargement and dysfunction of the spleen.
Personal Experience and Awareness |
---|
Though I do not have any personal spleen related issues, I have seen people who have experienced this draining issue. Most of which are those who have sickle cell disease and infections such as Mononucleosis.
The stories of individuals who have undergone splenectomies (removal of the spleen) highlights the importance of taking care of our spleen. This is true as the removal of this spleen threatens the ability of the body to fight against infections naturally. To remedy this, such an individual may needs to live on vaccines and antibiotics lifelong.
