SLC | S22W5 : Teachers as examples and role models
Hi friends,
I am Jyoti from India. Here I am going to participate in the SLC S22 W4 contest: https://steemit.com/hive-167213/@miftahulrizky/slc-or-s22w5-teachers-as-examples-and-role-models organised by @miftahulrizky in Teachers & Students community
After understanding the course material, explain why teachers need to be examples and role models for students, and how much influence does this have on student behavior and character?
As per my understanding in the lesson, in Indonesia, the term “Guru” carries profound significance. Derived from Javanese language expressions “digugu” (to be trusted) and “ditiru” (to be emulated), it illustrates that teachers are not just educators but also guides in character development. This dual role requires teachers to embody qualities that inspire trust and respect.
If students observe their teachers as ethical, especially when they are honest, empathetic or/and bear integrity, the students will emulate these ethical principles. For example, contradiction, such a teacher may turn up at school with a smile on their face as a way of motivating their students to persevere if they meet any setback in life. Education is not just about the content; it’s about an example of what those content values and practices look like in real life.
Each teacher has a different character and personality, name as many negative behaviors that you are aware of in yourself while teaching.
Negative behaviors of teachers include being aggressive towards students, pointing out and punishing their mistakes, and comparing and putting down other students, discouraging them by their inabilities, etc.
Such negative actions affect the character of the students and their future is also affected. The role of the teacher is very important in creating good students. It is the duty of the teacher to encourage the students and try to correct their mistakes rather than punishing them.
Share with us examples of positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors that you have implemented in your daily life with students? What educational values are contained in these behaviors.
Positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors may actively work on their personality traits. Here are some practical steps:
Model Good Behavior: It also important that one should always act appropriately before the students. It might be as basic as saying excuse me, please, sorry and thank you or as complex as tolerance will not be easily forgotten.
Communicate Openly: Create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. An approachable demeanor encourages open dialogue.
Show Empathy: Understand that each student comes from different backgrounds and experiences. Taking time to listen to their stories fosters connection and trust.
Practice Consistency: Be reliable in your expectations and responses to student behavior. Consistency helps build a secure environment for learning.
Encourage Participation: Involve students in classroom discussions and decision-making processes; this empowers them while promoting social skills.
Character building is not limited to specific subjects like Religious Education or Civic Education—every lesson offers an opportunity for instilling values such as honesty, responsibility, generosity, and discipline across all disciplines including Mathematics or Arts.
For example:
- Mathematics teaches precision and perseverance.
- Arts nurtures creativity and self-expression.
Teachers have the unique responsibility of embedding these values within their subject matter while still focusing on knowledge transfer.
As educators strive for excellence in character building alongside academic teaching, they will undoubtedly shape not only knowledgeable individuals but also compassionate members of society.
What benefits do you feel from the exemplary behavior you have shown so far, has it had a positive impact on the behavior and character of your students?
Ultimately, the journey of becoming a role model is ongoing for every teacher. It requires self-awareness, reflection, and dedication to continuous improvement in both personality traits and social interactions with students.
This is also important for teachers who teach students in fields of Computer systems, Mathematics, art etc. There is much that teachers are expected to do more than transfer or pass on whatever knowledge they have acquired in school of Law, politics, Commerce, Administration, Technology etc In addition to nurture and shapes student’s character by instilling and nurturing values such as integrity and justice, patience and sincerity, humility and creativity, consistency responsibility, unity and disciplined attitude.
I would like to invite my friends
