SLC | S21W2: Effective Classroom Management

Hello, steemians. Im excited to be taking on this activity this week. Today I'll be writing on effective class management which I find interesting as I'm a teacher too. I also have personal experiences penned down as well.

  1. To the best of your knowledge, what is effective classroom management, and what does it have to do with planning, implementing, evaluating learning, and utilizing resources optimally? Explain the relationship of each of these points using your language. (2.5 points)

Effective Classroom management to my understanding refers to all the processes involved in teaching and educating of students as well as making the classroom conducive enough, making everyone free and well relaxed so as to assimilate the information given, implement it and grow to become intellectuals themselves.

In planning, effective classroom management comes in when a teacher understands the "audience", and takes cognisance of various factors; what type of students he or she is about to teach, the general background of the students, the age group, the topics suitable for teaching, the syllabus in relation to the course to be taught and deliberating on different styles and methods of coaching the students to get the best results

Exploring different textbooks and journals in the planning stage

Implementing comes when a teacher, having considered the best methods and topics to inculcate in the students, goes ahead to actually put into practice these methods while teaching.
Evaluating learning means checking up on the student to see how far he or she has progressed and identify changes that need to be made and also adjust some teaching methods if necessary to suit a student's needs and motivate the student to improve

Evaluating learning involves giving some extra support to the student to encourage seriousness.
Utilizing resources optimally means making use of resources such as textbooks and educational online tools to give the student extra support. It also means ensuring that each student has all that is needed to learn effectively.

2 How do you go about creating a classroom atmosphere that supports the learning process?The explanation you give is based on personal experience. (2 points)

I taught in a primary school last year and the students in my class were mostly from ages 8 to 10. The school management suggested that I group the students into four categories; alphas, betas, gammas and deltas. Looking at the situation I informed them that such grouping could be greatly problematic in future. No two students are the same. Students have different abilities when it comes to learning speed and interests. So I suggested that instead of grouping students into alphas, betas, gammas and deltas. The school should focus on creating an environment where students can learn freely and at their own pace without unnecessary comparisons and judgments.
That on my part was a step to achieving effective classroom management.

3 According to your experience and observations, what factors can hinder effective classroom management? Explain why these things are a hindrance. (2.5)

Effective classroom management can be hindered by various factors:

Cyber and physical bullying
From personal experience and observations, bullying has become increasingly predominant in schools these days. Students in senior classes tend to beat up juniors, demand money from them, send them on tiring errands or post humiliating statements or pictures of them online.

From my observation in school back then, students anonymously wrote humiliating information and most times lies about fellow students on a public platform mentioning names in detail. Students who are bullied cannot focus in class leading to academic failure, suicidal thoughts, or dropping out of school.
Also, students with special needs such as down syndrome, ticks, dyslexia, deafness, cerebral palsy if not managed well can hinder the effectiveness of a classroom.
Furthermore, classroom effectiveness can be hindered by excessive use of devices. Some students during classes tend to listen to music, take pictures of fellow mates instead of listening or taking notes. This excessive use of technology can hinder their academic progress and also slow down their cognitive thinking abilities.

4 Effective classroom management has a relationship with the Learning Contract? What do you think about this, explain comprehensively according to your thoughts. (2 points)

From my understanding a learning contract is an agreement written between a teacher and a student which outlines the goals, objectives, deadlines for working on projects, milestones to be achieved and the overall learning strategies to be adopted. There is also a signature area to signify that a deal has been made.
Well, I think this method can be effective in the classroom and at the same time students' abilities should be taken into consideration. Some students may not like this seemingly rigid method and may develop fear of falling below expectations or not achieving goals at the right time.
Teachers should therefore seek to ascertain the learning levels of students and adopt strategies that work best for each student. If a learning contract is accepted by the student then a teacher may as well go ahead to adopt it but if a student expresses fear or incapability a teacher may as well restrategize.
