SLC | S22W6 : Get to Know Your Students

It's the last week of Steemit Learning Challenge (season 22) in Brilliant Teacher's class where all the teachers are exposed to know and understand the characteristics of their students.

I will share my assignment below;

Each student has its unique characteristics and in order to understand these behaviors, the teacher must have different recognition methods which might likely take due processes.

I will explain the characteristics of students in which a teacher will likely encounter in the below table;

Characteristics	Description
Social Aspect	Many students are bold and ready to play and socialize with peers while others lack that ability to interact. This is as a result of their socio- cultural background.
Emotional Aspect	Emotional stability is required for a student to be able to learn properly, build a social relationship with others and face challenge. Learning motivation and interest for things only comes when a person's emotions are in good shape. So therefore, students can possess both negative and positive emotions depending on how they were raised or the situation that surrounds them in classroom.
Physical Aspect	physical aspect is also another characteristic that might likely affect students' learning ability and hinder concentration in class. Students with good health condition will definitely be different while those with health issues might likely lose concentration during learning period.
Spiritual Aspect	students who were cultured in moral and ethical values easily display these characteristics within their peers and even extend it to teachers.
Educational Background	Foundation or previous educational environment contribute greatly to the way a student act and learn in new environment.
Cognitive Aspect	Nature has made everyone different which is why every student has the ability to learn, understand and provide solution to problem differently.
Psychological Aspect	this has to do with a student's nature or personality; some are reserved and do not like to associate with peers while others are extrovert and ready to be seen and heard everywhere in the outside world.

Being that there are students with different characteristics, it is best for a teacher to apply proper understand and patience when dealing with the learners.

The three methods that were mentioned in this course are;
• Observation of behavior: this is where a teacher get to have a close view on each student by observing, understanding and analyzing their behavior in class and how they interact with their peers.

• Communication: Here, a teacher tend to have an opening conversation with a student in order to understand their view and mindset
• Self-Introduction Program: this is another way of getting to know a student's personality and it is easy with the use of psychological testing tools.

Using my twin siblings, I was able to try one method of recognizing a student’s characteristics which is observation of behavior method.

Twins: T-boy and T-girl

For psychological aspect which has to do with their personalities, T-boy is an extrovert while T-girl is an introvert and very much reserved.

In cognitive aspect, both are good in their own way but T-girl has the ability to understand and provide solution faster when tasks are given.

Both tend to share same similarities on how they manage their emotions and have same drive to learn.

Tasks that requires critical thinking and in depth analysis are more suitable to be given to students who fall under cognitive aspect. Students with high intellectual level are capable of solving problem of any kind. Their ability to understand and analyze will give them high advantage of thinking critically.

Feeling of depression or anxiety are both connected with emotions. A student who is in this situation is definitely having emotional problem and unable to manage it which is why it led to depression or anxiety. This negative feeling can come from educational environment or from home. Once a student start to develop such feelings, it is best for a teacher to pay more attention and create a safe space for proper communication. As a teacher, it will gladden my heart to help any student overcome such feelings.

How can I achieve that?!

• By observing
• By giving a listening ears to understand the student's situation
• Be less judgemental
• Teach the student how to fight the situation by introducing healthy routine
• Keep a close eye on the student till he or she recovers from such feeling.

From my experience , picking interest in getting to know my students in the past helped me to strengthen teacher-student relationships, I was able to communicate, understand their feelings, needs and also make the learning environment lively.
