INTRODUCTION

Last year during our Entrepreneurship training program, I had the opportunity to visit a local bakery with my classmates. At first, I felt it was one of those normal field trips that wasn't that serious. But that visit turned out to be one of the most unforgettable moments of the whole course that semester. The sweet aroma of freshly baked pastries, the way the staff welcomed us, and how the whole place was—it really stuck in my head.

As soon as I saw that this week’s contest was about bakery and pastry shop experiences, I didn't reason twice. I just knew that I must write about this particular bakery. Because it is not just about bread and snacks, it's the passion, the hard work, and that good aroma that makes one feel at home.

WHY BAKERIES MATTER IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Bakeries are not just places where bread and cakes are sold alone. In every community, one good bakery brings people together in ways that we ourselves do not notice sometimes. From that soft bread during early mornings, to the fine birthday and wedding cakes that make celebrations sweet, bakeries play a silent but important role in our daily lives. They create joyful moments with great meaning.

Bakeries Provide Job Opportunities

Apart from that, bakeries also provide job opportunities, especially for young people and women trying to learn a skill or support their family. If the bakery is managed well, can train apprentices, support farmers (since they buy flour, egg, butter and all that), and still adds value to agricultural produce that may have been a waste. It is one of those businesses that combine creativity with how to make better money legally.

In a town like Uyo where food is always part of celebration, to get a reliable bakery is like having a friend you can turn to when the need arises. From small chops to custom cakes—they always deliver.

WHY MAVISPEE BAKERY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION

(The business Logo)

Among all the businesses we visited during our entrepreneurship exposure, it was Mavispee that really stood out for me. From the first moment we entered, I just noticed that it was different. The branding was tip notch—their logo with cake and cherry gave that sweet professional vibe that would make you want to eat something.

But to say the truth, I was not just attracted to the fine look alone. It was the energy in the shop and the way they ran things really gingered my spirit. The owner, Mrs. Peace Ukeme Udom, didn't just talk to us like some random students. She spoke from the heart—like a person that had seen hard times, hustled, and still pushed till she made it.

The part that really moved me the most was that she doesn't just bake anyhow. She has a system. From pricing to handling customer requests, training new people, and even event planning—everything is organized. As a person still figuring out what I really want to do in life, seeing that kind of setup she built from scratch really opened my eye.

Mavispee didn't just show me how the bakery works, she showed what passion, structure, and consistency can achieve if you do not give up.

ABOUT THE BAKERY: MAVISPEE BAKERY AND EVENTS

📍 Location: 11 Etim Okon Usanga Street, off Water Fountain, Nwaniba Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

One of the places that really stood out for me during our entrepreneurship practice last year is Mavispee Bakery and Events. It is not your regular roadside shop, this is a 13-year-old business that has been serving better taste and fine elegance, just like their banner says. The bakery is located at 11, Etim Okon Usanga Street, off Water Fountain area in Uyo—a place that is filled with different small businesses. But, Mavispee stands out with the colorful display of cakes, bread, and other pastries for their showcase.

The Founder

The owner, Mrs. Peace Ukeme Udom, is a person I had a lot of respect for. She comes originally from Eket, but is married into Ibiono Ibom. And the way she built this her baking empire from scratch is really inspiring. Imagine running a bakery steadily for 13 years in Nigeria, that's not a small feat. That one alone shows that consistency and passion really pays.

From the outside, the shop is not too big, but once you enter, the activities going on are impressive. The smell of fresh cake would just hit you. Everywhere is clean, colorful and organized. I see cake tools, aprons, framed cake designs on the wall, and even their baking area is on point. It really shows are good at what they do.

What makes me more happy is how everything is well arranged. The wedding and birthday cakes they display, the pricing board, even the way customers call in to place orders—all this show doesn't joke. She put in her heart and soul, and you feel it from the way everything is done.

BUSINESS STRUCTURE AND HOW THINGS RUN AT MAVISPEE

One thing that really impressed me during our visit to Mavispee Cakes and Events was how organized the business was—even though it wasn’t a very large place, it was clear that things were structured and well-managed.

The business is run by Mrs. Peace Ukeme Udom, who is originally from Eket by birth and now married into Ibiono. Her shop is located at 11 Etim Okon Usanga street, off Water Fountain, Nwaniba Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. She has two main staff members who work full-time with her, and then there are others who come in when there are bulk orders or major events. These additional hands are usually freelance bakers or support staff who are not based in one location but come to assist whenever they are needed.

Working Hours and Activities

Their working hours begin from 8:00 am daily, and all the baking is done onsite—they have a well-equipped kitchen space attached to the main shop. Even though the shop looks simple from outside, the level of production and delivery that comes out of there is honestly something else.

Because the business is a mix of bakery and event catering, customers don’t usually come to sit in or eat there. It’s not like a fast-food spot. Rather, they focus more on event delivery services and custom orders. You can walk in to place an order or discuss your cake ideas, but most of the time, deliveries are made to clients for birthdays, weddings, or special occasions. She even mentioned how sometimes, orders can come back-to-back, especially during festive periods.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES OFFERED

Mavispee specializes in a range of sweet and savoury treats. You can literally name it, and they probably have it on their list. Some of the things they produce include:

  • Meat Pies

  • Egg Rolls

  • Chin Chin

  • Buns

  • Cupcakes

  • Small chops

  • Birthday and Wedding Cakes

  • Custom Cakes based on client designs (cartoon-themed, colour-coded, name-written, etc.)

  • Event snack trays

  • Doughnuts

  • Event catering (on request)

One unique thing I liked was the flexibility of her cake designs. She doesn’t just bake the usual round cakes; she can design based on what the client wants—cartoon characters, number cakes, Bible-themed cakes, corporate cakes for office parties, and more. She showed us some samples, and I must say, the creativity is mad!

Even though her shop wasn’t very big, the quality of work was like what you’d expect from a big Lagos bakery. Everything was neatly packaged, clean, and attractive. No wonder many clients come from different parts of town just to order from her.

WHAT THE BAKERY OFFERS (Services, types of cakes produced, facilities)

Mavispee Bakery and Events is not a very big place, but they still do their best to deliver good services to their customers. Most of the cakes made are based on each customer preference and need. So if you want a birthday cake, wedding cake, graduation or baby shower, just mention it and they would design it to your taste. Apart from those special requests, they also bake cupcakes often for people that live around the area. They are made in small quantities and usually do not last long on the shelf because people rush them.

The shop also does pastries like chin-chin, puff-puff, and small chops. During my training there, I noticed how they support small events too—like helping to set up cake stands or arrange sweets for parties. It doesn't just end in baking and selling alone; they are part of people's celebration.

Since it's a small shop, there is no sitting area or any big facilities. But they have all the basic equipment needed for baking and decorating cakes. The place is clean, organized and even though it is not big, it works very well for learning and production.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AT MAVISPEE BAKERY AND EVENTS
1000595585.jpg (we during the training)1000595590.jpg (Getting involved in the process)

As a mechanical engineering student in second year (second semester), we were informed that we go for an entrepreneurship training as part of our departmental requirements. Everybody in the class was assigned to different entrepreneurship centres across town, and I happen to be among the group sent to Mavispee Bakery and Events.

The whole program was supposed to last for six weeks, and twice every week. I still remembered that first day clearly—after lecture, together to the place as a group. All of us were tired but excited. When we reach there, Mrs. Peace Ukeme Udom, the owner, welcomed us with a warm smile. She just has this friendly and humble way she carries herself.

INTRODUCTION AND LEARNING STRUCTURE

She first gave us a short introduction, we then introduced ourselves, we talked a bit, laughed, shared our expectations and talked about how the next six weeks would look like. From that moment, everybody just settled in. No tension, no pressure.

Our learning was structured. We started from small chops like chin-chin and puff-puff, then move to cake baking. Each day we came, we focus on one particular item. For example, the second time we visited, we learnt how to prepare chin-chin. Even though I had an idea of how it was prepared, I had forgotten most of the steps. But Mrs. Peace took her time teach us from scratch.

SHE CARRIED US ALONG

1000595592.jpg

(Explaining what to do)

One sweet thing about everything was that, we were not just looking, we took part. From mixing the flour, to cutting, frying, even packaging, we were involved. She did not treat us like strangers or just visitors. She took us like trainees whom she really wanted to learn.

In fact, that woman is more than just an instructor, she was like a mother to us. Seeing the way she truly care. Sometimes rain may fall heavily, the weather would go bad, but we would still show up because of how she treated us.

One part I really enjoyed was when we eat the things we prepared. Of course, we contributed small money, but it makes the whole experience fun. After baking, we would sit down together, eat, gist, even laugh about what we had done and tease ourselves. That kind of relaxed learning environment can't be easily seen. Some places would not even allow you taste anything at all.

By the time we finished the training, I did not just come out with baking skills alone, I came out with deep respect for people in the baking industry. Mavispee Bakery and Events is not just a business, it is a place that gives young people hope, skill, and encouragement. The kind of love and energy Mrs. Peace put into training people, I would never forget it.

CONCLUSION

WHY MAVISPEE BAKERY AND EVENTS STANDS OUT

Spending six weeks at Mavispee Bakery and Events was more than just an ordinary school assignment—it turned out to be a serious life experience that I would never forget in a hurry. What made this bakery special is not only the sweet taste of their pastries or how fine their custom cakes are. It is the heart behind the whole business. Mrs. Peace Ukeme Udom does not just run a bakery, she mentors people, she teaches, and she inspires everybody that enters her shop.

She has built a professional business but still very personal. A place where learning is coupled with laughter, and students like us are not just tolerated, we are welcomed like family. Her eye for detail, the way she chases for excellence, and the motherly care she gives her trainees and workers, all these things makes Mavispee truly different. You wouldn't just go there to learn how to bake alone, you would gain confidence, and better respect in the hustle of entrepreneurship.

If you are looking for where to learn baking or you need high quality cakes or pastries for your event, I would highly recommend Mavispee Bakery and Events. But beyond just the cake and training, I would recommend the place to any student that wants to see how far passion, hard work, and even little kindness can build a business.

Experiences like this are also one way to support small businesses in our community. When students like us visit and interact with real entrepreneurs, we help give their business more visibility, and at the same time, we also understand how much effort is put behind the value they create. It's a win-win—they grow, we learn.

"Sometimes, the best classrooms are not in schools—they are inside the heart and hands of people who truly love what they do."
