I consider myself an artist even if I don't create. I am an introvert, but that doesn't stop me from stimulating others and trying to help where I can,
Steemit could do way more since not only artists need critics, but everyone does (critics are not necessarily negative, it is the personal vision how we look at the said words that makes us dislike them or label it as negative).
Most artists aren't strong, they are vulnerable, emotional, overwhelmed but they can be if they have peace of mind and are surrounded by like minded.
Should the freewriters and Art & Steemit let themselves be drowned by vutures only out for a chunk of free meat?

In each of the golden ages of history, there have been newspapers and other media, dedicated to criticism. They were very famous. They made many artists known. Criticism generates controversy, progress. Not all criticism is negative, as you rightly say, it is a paradigm misconfigured in the mind. I like real criticism. I could draw experiences from negative criticism, of course criticism with foundations.
Lezama Lima, one of the writers of the group origins in Cuba. One of the greats (he was a living encyclopedia), he became important in Cuba and the world because of a note (criticism) written by Julio Cortazar. Then the foreign media and in Cuba, immediately published his novel PARADISO. Have you heard of Lezama Lima?

No, I haven't but I agree that criticism or positive or negative does make people famous. It's even what they say about the gossip magazines and what children already learn that negative attention (being punished) is attention as well.
True, a lot of controversy and negative criticism is used in this century to viralize something. Sometimes the lines between what is permissible are blurred. It seems that only fame or likes are important. Criticism is a vision, which indicates where we can improve.
