Saso di Castalda is small but with a population of less than 1000. It is a blink of an eye and you may miss this type of space but it would be a shame if you did. It sits at an altitude of 939 meters and is a maze of narrow and down roads that keep locals fit. The village is nestled in the midst of nature, surrounded by woods connected by rivers and overlooking the vegetable rocks of the mountains in every corner and will remain so as it is surrounded by the Lusano Val de Agri Lungresi ,National Park. Which is one of the youngest Italian National Park.
So when you are a small obscure village surrounded by some of Italy's best natural wonders, what do you do to attract tourists? Apparently you build a bridge to the moon or locally called Ponte Ella Luna. known as. Captured in this shot, the bridge is in all its glory, 1000 feet long and 400 feet high, it is suspended between the two peaks of the Apennines, it takes about 30 minutes to cross the bridge but warning It is not for the faint of heart.
So why did the locals name the bridge "Moon" because the most famous son of the village is Roko Petron, who is migrating from his parents' village, he was a mechanical engineer and director of NASA's Apollo program during the 60's. Which helped to include the first men. On the moon. The most famous son in the village is the priest, historian and author Don Giuseppe de Luca (1898-1962), a prominent figure in the Vatican and a well-known essayist, who endowed the village with literary works by showering his works in the family home. What is it. A park that is mostly used for cultural events.
