Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, was a day I will always cherish, not just because of the joy of cooking, but also because of the delightful experience of sharing a delicious meal with my loved ones.
As a proud, hard working and a caring mother with a good cooking skills, I decided to treat my family and neighbours to a mouthwatering Afang soup, a traditional Nigerian delicacy. With a clear plan in mind, I set out to prepare the ingredients needed for this sumptuous meal.
INGREDIENTS USED
• Afang leaves
• Water leaf
• Meat
• Fish
• Kanda
• Crayfish
• Palm oil
• Periwinkle
• Maggi & Salt
First, I began by washing, drying and slicing the Afang leaves, carefully selecting the right amount for the soup. Next, I pounded the leaves using a mortar, releasing the rich flavors and aroma that Afang leaves are known for.

While the Afang leaves were being pounded, I washed the water leaves several times to remove any sand or debris. Once clean, I chopped the leaves into tiny pieces, ready to be added to the soup.
With the leaves prepared, I steamed the meat until it was tender, then added water and palm oil to create a rich broth. I also added the chopped water leaves, fish, crayfish, kanda, periwinkle, Maggi, and salt, stirring gently to combine all the ingredients.

Finally, I poured in the pounded Afang leaves, stirring the mixture until everything was well combined. I allowed the soup to simmer for about 4 minutes, filling the entire house with the irresistible aroma of Afang soup.
Once the soup was ready, I scooped it into bowls and shared it with my neighbors, who were equally excited to taste the delicious meal.

After sharing, I prepared a plate of garri to accompany the soup and sat down with my little son, Princewill, to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
The experience was truly heartwarming, watching Princewill savour each swallow of the garri with Afang soup, his eyes lighting up with delight. It was a moment of pure joy, one that I will always treasure.

In that instant, I realized that cooking is not just about following a recipe, but about sharing love, care, and happiness with others. And as I looked at Princewill, I knew that my cooking skills had brought us closer together, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
