Tell Your Story #48 — A Lesson from an Old Lady in the Heat
So this week something very emotional and unexpected happened to me. It’s not something big or dramatic, but it really touched my heart, and I think I will remember it for a long time , so iwanted to share with you..
A few days ago, I had an exam at my university. My paper finished around 12:30 p.m., and after submitting it, I was feeling quite low. The paper was tiring, andd I hadn’t eaten anything in the morning because I left in a hurry. I skipped breakfast, so I was already feeling weak and dizzy.
Our university bus was scheduled to leave around 1:30 p.m., so in the free time between, I went with a few of my friends to a nearby market to buy some snacks. It was a hot day, and on top of my empty stomach.,
I had so much on my mind, college stress, house chores waiting at home, and assignments. Honestly, I wasn’t in the best mood. I just wanted to finish quickly and get back home to rest.
As we were walking back from the market and heading toward the university bus stop, something caught my attention. Just near a closed shop, under the shade of a small tre, I noticed an old woman sitting quietly by herself. Her clothes were simple, worn out, and a bit dusty.
She looked extremely tired and was using a folded newspaper to fan herself in the heat. In front of her, there were a few face masks and some toffes placed on a small bag she was selling them. She looked weak, maybe even dizzy, like she hadn’t eaten or had water in a while. People were passing by without even noticing her, as if she wasn’t there.
I don't know why, but I couldn’t just walk away. Something inside me told me to stop. So, I gently went up to her and asked, "Amma ji, are you okay?"
She looked up and gave me the weakest smile. In a soft voice, she said she had come from a far off area to try and sell some masks and toffees, but the heat had made her feel dizzy, so she sat down to rest ,I felt bad, I handed her the cold water bottle I was carrying.
She took it slowly, drank a little, and then closed her eyes as if she finally felt some relief. I had a few peach in my bag that I had just bought, so I offered her one. She smiled again, this time with a bit more life, and accepted it gently.
We sat there for a few minutes. She slowly began to speak, telling me that she had no one left in her life. Her husband had passed away years ago, and they never had any children.
She now lived alone in a small rented room and tried to survive by selling small things like masks and toffees. Sometimes, she said, she barely earned enough to buy herself a proper meal.
Before I got up to leave, she looked at me and said something that stayed with me long after I returned home. She said with a gentle smile,
“Beta, kabhi kabhi insaan ko paise nahi chahiye hote… sirf itna chahiye hota hai ke koi usse dekhe, haal pooche, aur kuch der saath baith jaye.”
("Child, sometimes we don’t need money… we just need someone to notice us, ask how we are, and sit with us for a little while.")
That one sentence hit me hard. I felt tears in my eyes. I realized how often we are so busy with our own lives, our phones, our problems we forget that others are carrying silent pain too.
I stayed with her for a little while longer, just to make sure she was feeling better before I left. Before going, I also bought a few masks from her not because I needed them, but because I wanted to support her in some small way. I even gave some of the masks to my friends who were with me.
She didn’t ask for any money, but I quietly gave her a little amount so she could take a rickshaw back home comfortably. She kept giving me heartfelt blessings, and honestly, I felt so emotional and grateful that I had stopped for her that day.
🌸 What I Learned This Week:
This small moment with that old woman reminded me what real kindness means. It’s not always about big actions or grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s just about noticing someone, offering them a little time, a smile, or a few kind words. Buying a small item from her, sharing it with my friends, and simply sitting beside her made me feel more connected to the world around me.
In our busy lives, we often forget that there are people around us who are quietly struggling. This experience reminded me that sometimes, what someone needs most is not money but a little attention, care, and human warmth.
This week, I learned that kindness doesn’t cost anything, but its value is beyond measure.🌸🌼
