🏵️THE DIARY GAME 🏵️

Eid Means Joy, Eid Means Happiness

Muslims celebrate two Eids each year—one is Eid-ul-Fitr, and the other is Eid-ul-Adha. This time, it was Eid-ul-Adha.

On the day of Eid, all the necessary chores need to be completed early in the morning because once we return from Eid prayers, it becomes difficult to find time for any work. So, the night before Eid, I went to bed early. On Eid day, I woke up at 4:30 in the morning. After waking up, the first thing I did was offer the Fajr prayer. Once I completed the prayer, I went to the field to cut grass for our cows at home. I cut all the grass by myself. If the grass wasn’t cut that morning, the cows would have remained hungry all day, as we would be busy with the sacrificial rituals and wouldn't get time later.

After cutting grass for the cows, I returned home, took a bath, and got ready for the Eid prayer. The Eid congregation in our area was scheduled for 7:30 AM. We left for the Eidgah (open prayer ground) 20 minutes earlier. Before going to the Eidgah, we met our mother and took her blessings. Every Eid, the three of us brothers go to our mother and take her prayers. This time was no different. Then, we three brothers walked together to the Eidgah. Fortunately, it is located very close to our house, so we didn’t have to go far.

When we arrived at the Eidgah, the Imam was already delivering a sermon. He beautifully explained the virtues of Qurbani (sacrifice) and how to build brotherhood among Muslims based on the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith. He also urged everyone to regularly offer the five daily prayers. After the sermon, the Eid prayer began. Once the prayer was complete, the Khutbah (post-prayer sermon) started. As soon as the Khutbah ended, the Eidgah in our village began the collection process.

This collection is done under several categories—one for the Imam, one for the mosque, one for orphans, and one for the local organization. Every Eid, this collection is done in the same way after the prayer.

After that, a few friends and I took pictures together. Once the collection was completed, it was announced on the mosque loudspeaker. Then, with a long dua (supplication) by the Imam, the Eid prayer formally concluded. After that, everyone got busy with their own Qurbani (sacrifice). Those who were offering sacrifice got engaged in slaughtering their cows and managing the rest of the process.

After completing the Eid prayer, I returned home. The very first task at home was to get everything ready for the Qurbani (sacrifice). So, I brought out all the knives from inside the house. This year, we were supposed to sacrifice a goat at our home. We started with the goat first, with everyone participating. After that, I came inside and had a light breakfast. Once breakfast was over, I went back to the goat and carefully skinned it. We had to do this quickly, otherwise the workload would pile up later.

We were also offering Qurbani of two cows on a shared basis. Both cows were to be sacrificed at our place. There was going to be a lot of work involved with that. So, finishing the goat early was a relief.

After a while, the people who were sharing in the sacrifice of the cows arrived. Then the two cows were sacrificed. Since there were not many people, I joined in to help skin the cow. I had never skinned a cow before — this was my first time. Alhamdulillah, I did as well as I could. Because I was working so much, I couldn't take any pictures.

Later, when the meat-cutting started, I freshened up a bit, came inside, and ate some khichuri. After finishing my meal, I went back outside. When I got there, I saw some people chopping meat, some slicing it with knives, and others sorting it out. Everyone was working together in unity. This is the true joy of Eid-ul-Adha — doing everything ourselves for the animals we sacrifice.

Later, I took a few selfies with the people working. Since everyone was so busy, no one really looked at the camera. But the purpose of taking selfies with them was to capture us all in one frame. When I showed them the photos, they were really happy. And just like that, our Qurbani tasks continued smoothly.

When all the meat had been cut, I brought our digital weighing machine from home. This is a machine we own — we used it for weighing when we did dragon fruit farming. Apart from that, it is used for various household purposes as well. We began mixing the meat properly so it would be evenly distributed. Then the meat was weighed and divided into seven portions.

Sir is always the one who handles the weighing, and this time was no exception. He personally took care of the weighing and ensured everything was divided equally. This was done so that no one would feel any sense of unfairness. One of the major conditions of Qurbani is that those sharing the sacrifice must not feel any dissatisfaction in their hearts. Everyone should offer Qurbani solely for the pleasure of Allah Almighty.

Our Qurbani was completed with the final step of distributing the shares. After that, the meat was brought home and divided into three portions: one part for ourselves, one for our relatives, and the other part for the needy and underprivileged people in society. In our area, there's a beautiful system in place that ensures Qurbani meat reaches every individual in the community.

Eid means joy, and the joy of Eid-ul-Adha lies in the Qurbani itself. It felt really good to spend the entire day working like this. I pray to Almighty Allah to grant us the opportunity to continue offering Qurbani in the coming years as well.
