Weekly Reflections #22: Christmas Traditions Around the World
What does Christmas mean to you and your family?
Christmas means a lot to me and my family in my family Christmas means the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ which is a day for everyone in my family to connect.
Also, in my family, Christmas means a time of connection with the people we love, a time of meaning, and a time to think and care about others.
My parents would always tell us in the household that Christmas is a time of new beginnings, and an opportunity to start afresh grow from our learning, and become more whole and connected which is why many of us travel from afar to celebrate Christmas with loved ones. In my family Christmas is a special day for everyone to eat, take pictures, visit and invite friends, and wear new clothes which we view as a theme of Joy.
How do you and your family celebrate Christmas?
In my family, we value the Christmas celebration before the day of Christmas my parents used to buy new clothes for my younger ones as for we that have grown old they do give us money to buy clothes for ourselves which are the clothes that we do wear and take pictures on the day of Christmas.
During Christmas Eve, we usually kill a goat and some chicken and fry them very well to have time to celebrate on the day of Christmas. On the day of Christmas, we usually start our celebration we prayers and thanksgiving to God my parents would wake everyone for family parents who immediately after the prayer would then begin to embrace and wish each other happyy Christmas.
Church service is usually by 8 am and we do dress up in our Christmas clothes and go to the church after church we then take family pictures before going home for eating and dancing. Christmas celebrations are usually fun in my family.
Are the any special decorations, foods, or customs?
Yes, there are usually special decorations, or foods in my family. We usually decorate our home with Christmas lights and trees on 20th December which is to show that we are close to the celebration of Christmas. As for food fried rice, stew rice, and enough meat are usually used to decorate the food we eat. There are usually excess drinks and food decorated in mouth kitchen, refrigerator, etc.
What are your favorite memories from past Christmas celebrations?
My favorite memory from the past Christmas celebrations was the day that my dad took me and my elder sister to one of the busiest recreation centers in my town.
When I was still small I was around 15 years old my dad took me to the place. As we got to the place I met people celebrating, riding on horses, drinking ice cream, and a lot of me which I almost got misplaced because of the friend that I followed. My parents began looking for my whereabouts and they later found me crying.
