Witnesses typically engage with the community by providing various forms of support and services. Participating in curation is one of those forms of engagement. Those are surely different witnesses. You can check a more comprehensive list of Steem witnesses here:

I try to understand which witnesses. Is this a club of several witnesses or all witnesses?
During all those years I cannot say witnesses typically engage it feels more aa if they are mainly absent. Does anyone know @symbionts is an iniative of some or one witness?
Is @ecosyntgesizer, always in the red numbers, also part of it?

Regarding our official curation account, @ecosynthesizer, it has been under attack for a long time, beginning with coordinated efforts from @bullionstackers after we used it to shield numerous communities from his downvotes. This is why it has a negative reputation.
