Hace un poco más de dos meses un pequeño colibrí hizo nido en el patio de mi casa. Escogió para anidar un frágil arbusto que creció en un recipiente de barro, por acá lo llamamos porrón. El sitio escogido es perfecto para el camuflaje. Los colores del arbusto se asemejan mucho al plumaje del ave.

A little over two months ago a small hummingbird made a nest in my backyard. It chose to nest in a fragile bush that grew in a clay pot, around here we call it a porrón. The site chosen is perfect for camouflage. The colors of the bush are very similar to the bird's plumage.

Al principio no me había dado cuenta de que tenía ese nuevo vecino. Sí me parecía extraño verlo tan seguido rondando por el patio y pasando muy cerca de mí. A veces casi llegó a rozarme cuando he estado sentado tomando un café. El nido lo hizo como a un metro y medio de donde yo me siento, y como a unos dos metros de donde estaciono el vehículo. La verdad es que ha sido muy confianzudo para instalarse en ese lugar. Una noche hasta se metió dentro de la casa, me tocó retirar todos los mosquiteros de las ventanas para lograr que saliera.

Desde que descubrí el nido me he dedicado a observar el comportamiento del Colibrí. He pasado muchas horas viendo como sale del nido para ir a alimentarse en un arbusto de hojas anaranjadas, que también queda cerca, en el mismo patio. Por algún motivo extraño, quizás para despistar, nunca sale en línea recta para buscar la comida. Siempre hace un rodeo por detrás de una escalera, come de las flores naranjas y vuelve otra vez para posarse en el nido. Esa rutina la hizo en los primeros tiempos, hasta que nació uno de los diminutos pichones.

Since discovering the nest, I've been observing the hummingbird's behaviour. I have spent many hours watching it leave the nest to go and feed in an orange-leafed bush, which is also nearby, in the same yard. For some strange reason, perhaps to mislead, it never goes out in a straight line to look for food. She always makes a detour behind a staircase, eats from the orange flowers and comes back again to perch in the nest. He did this routine in the early days, until one of the tiny chicks was born.

Hoy volví a ver al colibrí posado en el nido, como que no le gustó que yo asumiera el papel de madre del pichoncito. Quizás hasta en las especies animales exista el concepto de los celos.

Today, I saw the hummingbird again, as if she did not like me taking on the role of mother of the chick. Perhaps even in animal species there is a concept of jealousy.

Ahora me ha dado por preguntarme por qué en esta etapa de mi vida me ha tocado tener esta experiencia. Me distraigo mucho tiempo pensando en cuál enseñanza oculta pueda estar tras la decisión del Colibrí de hacerse mi vecino.

Todas las fotos fueron hechas con la Olympus E500. El proceso fue realizado con Photoshop CS4 a partir de archivos RAW. En el procesado básicamente lo que hago son ajustes de iluminación por zonas, para ello utilizo selecciones a mano alzada y las difumino con un filtro de desenfoque Gaussiano. Para acentuar el enfoque utilizo un filtro de paso alto con el modo de fusión luz intensa.

All the photos were taken with the Olympus E500. The process was done with Photoshop CS4 from RAW files. In the processing basically what I do is adjust the lighting by zones, for that I use freehand selections and blur them with a Gaussian blur filter. To accentuate the focus I use a high-pass filter with the intense light fusion mode.
