The toys that made me. By Alejandra Her.

The adults we are today were children at some point. Many of us forget this, and we want to treat children like adults. I think sooner or later we all forget it sometime. We forget it because we stop doing childish things, we stop creating.

The most wonderful thing about the illustration is that it allows me to get in touch with that girl that I was through the creation of things, drawings, toys, through manual work.

As a child, I was full of insecurities and loneliness, but I always had the company of toys and books. It is something that I have not stopped doing, I still make toys for my daughters, and they make toys for me. There is something wonderful about creating a playful instrument, no matter the age of the user. Turning rag into a doll is basically magic.

The person I am is made up of the toys I’ve received, the ones I made for myself, the ones I made for my daughters and the ones they have made for me.

But I also want to share some photographs of the real toys

¿Do you remember this kind of doll? The plastics is itchy wen you bite them haha. I love this doll. It was the first gift I receive from my grandmother. It is still very important for me, and also for my daughters.

My daughters made these for me. The left one is queen poppy. What I like the most about her is that is made with Barbie doll hair, it was very exciting to see that they took the hair of that doll (Barbie was a gift she receive from a cousin and I don’t like that kind of doll) to make a doll for me.
The one of the right is a bunny. It’s only the head, but she can use ears as arms.

Finally, I want to share my creation process
I used ink, I love using ink because some times my hand shakes a little, and also the line, and it’s ok.

Los juguetes que me hicieron. Por Alejandra Her.

Los adultos que somos hoy fueron niños en algún momento. Muchos lo olvidamos, y queremos tratar a los niños como adultos. Creo que tarde o temprano, todos lo olvidamos en algún momento. Lo olvidamos porque dejamos de hacer cosas de niños, dejamos de crear.

Lo más maravilloso de la ilustración es que me permite tener en contacto con esa niña que fui a través de la creación de cosas, de dibujos, de juguetes, a través del trabajo manual.

De niña estuve empapada de inseguridades y soledad, pero siempre tuve la compañía de los juguetes y libros. Es algo que no he dejado de hacer, aún hago juguetes para mis hijas, y ellas hacen juguetes para mi. Hay algo maravilloso en la creación de un instrumento lúdico, no importa la edad de quien lo use. Convertir trapo en una muñeca es básicamente magia.

La persona que soy está formada por los juguetes que me regalaron, los que hice para mi, los que hice para mis hijas y los que ellas han hecho para mi.

Sin embargo, quiero compartir con ustedes un par de fotos de los juguetes reales:

¿Se acuerdan de estas muñecas? El plástico picaba cuando las mordía, jajaja. Fue el primer regalo que recibí de mi abuela. Aún es muy importante para mi, y también lo es para mis hijas.

Mis hijas hicieron estas para mi. La de la izquierda se llama La reina Poppy. Lo que más me gusta de ella es que su cabello fue ello con cabello de Barbie. Para mi fue emocionante ver que le cortarán el cabello a la muñeca Barbie (regalo de una prima. No me gusta esa muñeca) para hacer una muñeca para mi.
La de la derecha es una conejita. Aunque es solo la cabeza, sus orejas funcionan como brazos

Finalmente quiero compartirles el proceso del dibujo. Use tintas. Me encanta hacerlo, porque al usarla a veces mi mano tiembla, y así queda la línea y esta bien.
