Behaviors of teens and how the environment affects them
Teen behaviors are the ways of acting, thinking, and expressing emotions of an individual between childhood to young adulthood — roughly age 12 to 18. This phase involves fast physical, emotional and social changes, so that more often than not teenager behavior is driven by the need to individuate and the need of being recognized socially through groups.
The three biggest things that effect the behavior of adolescents are as follows:
First and foremost the family, the first environment that impacts values, norms and thinking of adolescents. The Family, Orientation to Parenting and Parent-Child Communication and Emotional Attention
Social ← part (with peers and school) that the socialization and forming identity of adolescents takes place.
Adolescents typically conform to or follow group norms in order to be accepted because they always seek acceptance.
The media (traditional and digital) informs us with all kinds of information, lifestyles and values that adolescents are subject to, believe and in consequence behave.
Aloud enough family & social media have a tremendous impact, of self esteem for the adolescent and others. Social media may create a place for sharing and affirmation (in the form of likes, comments) but it also adds more pressure when we feel we have to look a certain way, do things or act in a specific manner because of the beauty, the lifestyle, the achievement “norm". The “ideal” lives of others can make typical adolescents feel inadequate and point less. While a family filled with support and positive affirmation or really listening to their struggles will enhance self efficacy of adolescents.
Peer pressure and the influence of social media on mental health of adolescents the most. The stress, anxiety and often depression of having to conform, of being perceived as attractive by a peer group. This pressure is exacerbated by social media as they show lives which are not based on reality.
Many adolescents who feel alienation or not like the others could go through an identity confusion or maybe feel like they suck. Thus, parents, teachers and communities must work hard to build an environment that teenagers are accepted and empowered with healthy expectations. Teenagers need a good education in mental health and more basic digital literacy, so that the social media they consume is used to enrich their lives, not a platform for unhealthy interactions.
