"Contest| From pen to screen: How writing has changed in the 21st century!"

Judging from your knowledge, What is "Digital writing and what is Handwriting?"

Digital writing

Coming from my crude knowledge I can say digital writing is the act of using electronic devices to create and propagate written content. Such takes place in platforms like: Text messages, Emails, Online articles Websites, Blogs, Social media etc.
We use phones, computer, pads and other electronic devices with screen to engage in such writing.

Handwriting

With my little knowledge I think that handwriting a form of writing that you use your hands. We can make use of brush, pen, pencil or other writing tools to create written words, character and or sentences on books or paper. It's a unique form of expression, it usually reflect the identify and the individual's style.

Which do you use more everyday: handwriting or digital writing? Express yourself.

Though I was born in the 90s and my teachers right from the nursery school I attended till tertiary institution taught us how to write using pen and pencil. However things gradually changed. As I'm speaking to you right now I know the next generation which will be the generation of our children and grandchildren won't use pencils and pen anymore. I can't really remember the last time I wrote with a pen or pencil. I'm an artist, so the only time I use a pencil is when I'm drawing and the only time I use pen is when I want to sign my autograph on my artwork.
I even have a notepad installed in my mobile phone. I do all my writing in the notepad installed in my phone. I prefer this digital writing because it's what we have at the moment and its efficacy can't be compared to handwriting. After I graduated from the college I have been writing digitally. I can't remember the last time I wrote on a book. As a blogger in steemit I write almost everyday and I do that digitally. I love the digital writing because you can't easily lost your smart phone like you can lost your hard cover notebook.

For memory retention, creativity, expression and effective learning, would you go for digital writing or handwriting, Why?

Generally you can't under estimate the power of handwriting. After my little research and level of academic experience I've learnt that traditional way of writing has the power to spur creativity, help in memory retention, expression and effective learning. You can't compare the brain of someone who writes with handwriting and that of the person who writes with digital device.

Should schools still initiate handwriting in this digital age? Do you think it would profit the young ones?

Even when digital writing has overwhelmed handwriting it doesn't mean handwriting will be out of place or extinct. Our children should learn how to write with their hands.
Handwriting allows us to express ourselves very well. handwriting is far more better than digital writing. Writing with your hands goes deep into your brain, stimulating you to think and brainstorm.
I have had experience from handwriting and digital writing. I now come to the conclusion that handwriting will really help our children. Handwriting is a skill. It shouldn't be swept away by technology and digital era.

State the pros and cons of each; digital writing and handwriting.

Pros of handwriting

✓ Handwriting can be very calming when it comes to therapeutic benefits. This is not the same with digital writing.

✓ In handwriting distraction is slim because you have to stay focused.

✓ Handwriting improves retention of information and knowledge. It also enhance memorization of information.

✓ Handwriting can provide creativity and idea generation.

✓ Like in poetry and prose, handwritten contents can help you express you emotions.

Cons of handwriting

✓ Handwriting can easily get lost: notebooks are easy to destroy by tearing a page or erasing too much, water damage, etc. They can also be easy to lose.

✓ There's no way to backup handwriting compared to digital writing. Except you scan or recopy it.

✓ For you to do correction can be so tedious. Most times you can't even do corrections without damaging the document or note.

✓ Writing with notebooks can accumulate greatly over time resulting in a bunch of old notes that you are not sure if will use again and takes up a lot of space. This can never be the same for digital writing.

✓ Handwriting is time consuming compared to typing.

Pros of digital writing

✓ This form of writing can easily be copied and shared quickly.

✓ In digital writing you can go back and correct mistakes and do easy revision.

✓ Digital writing is very fast. Its speed can't be compared to handwriting.

✓ In digital writing you can organize and store your information easily.

✓ Especially in the internet, digital writing contents can incorporate images, links and videos.

✓ In terms of accessibility digital writing or content can reach a global audience easily.

Cons of digital writing

✓ Most time digital writing requires access to digital device. This means you have to depend on technology.

✓ Some digital writing depends on internet connection. That means you may not have access to it unless you have internet subscription on your device.

✓ Some digital platforms for writing makes it difficult to focus because of constant distraction for other apps.

✓ Digital writing can easily be copied, shared. Thus, this may lead to plagiarism and copyright problems.

✓ Digital writing can easily be edited or deleted, Therefore you can lost the information easily.

✓ Compared to handwriting the digital form of writing can cause information overload due to the numerous amount of the digital content in the write up.
