Growing up in Nigeria, I noticed a significant difference in parenting styles. Some parents were old school, while others were more modern. As I grew older, I realized that these differences had a profound impact on the children.

Old school parents often believed in strict rules and discipline. They wouldn't allow their children to go out and play with friends without close supervision. In fact, some parents wouldn't even let their children go out at all, fearing the outside world was too dangerous. They believed that by keeping their children close, they were protecting them and teaching them discipline.

But I remember feeling suffocated by these rules. I would want to go out and play with my friends, but my parents would say no, citing safety concerns or the need to focus on my studies. Looking back, I realize that this strict approach has it's drawbacks. I began to feel like I couldn't trust my partners with my thoughts and feelings. I would lie to them about my whereabouts or activities, just to avoid getting in trouble.

This lack of trust led to a strain in our relationship. I felt like I couldn't share my problems or concerns with my parents. I would keep everything to myself, fearing their reaction. And when I finally did open up, it was often too late, and the issues had escalated.

On the other hand, new school parents take a different approach. They believe in giving their children more freedom and autonomy. By giving children more freedom and encouraging open communication, parents can build trust and foster healthy relationships. This approach may seem more lenient, but it's often more effective in raising confident, responsible, and well adjusted children.

Let me share another story. My friend, who was raised by old school parents. They were strict and controlling, never allowing her to go out or make her own decisions. As a result, she felt suffocated and resentful. She began to rebel against her parent's rules, sneaking out and lying about her activities.

When her parents discovered her deceit, they were devastated. They realized too late that their strict approach has driven their daughter away. They began to re evaluate their parenting style, seeking a more balanced approach that prioritized trust and open communication.

Her story highlights the importance of finding a balance between structure and autonomy. Parents should strive to create an environment where children feel comfortable expressing themselves and making responsible decisions. By doing so, parents can build trust, foster healthy relationships, and raise confident, responsible children.

Many parents are recognizing the importance of emotional intelligence, autonomy, and open communication. They're seeking a balance between structure and freedom, discipline and empathy.

As a society, we're beginning to understand that parenting is not a one size fits all approach. Every child is unique, wnd and different parenting styles and finding what works best for our children, we can raise a generation of confident, responsible, and well adjusted individuals.

For me, it's not entirely valid. While discipline is important, emotional intelligence and empathy are crucial too. Parents should find a balance between structure and empathy.

Yes, they were strict, but it had it's benefits. However, I believe that this strictness can also have negative consequences, such as trust issues and dishonesty.

I was raised with a mix of old school and new school parenting. My parents were strict, but they also encouraged me to express myself and make responsible decisions.

4 Were you raised right?

I think so. My parents taught me valuable lessons, but I wish I'd learned more about emotional intelligence and autonomy. Now, as an adult, I'm learning to balance structure and empathy.

Parenting is not easy, and there's no right way. But I think it's essential to find a balance between rules and freedom. By being open, understanding, and supportive, parents can help their children grow into confident and responsible individuals. Every child is different, so parents need to find what works best for their child.allowing them to have to some freedom while also advising them to be careful.making sure they understand the importance of responsibility, and helping them develop the skills they need to succeed in life.

This way, we can give our children the best chance to succeed in life.

This is beautifully written, I like how you shared all those experiences, we can't keep our kids from the world because we will not always be in their lives. Parenting is about intentionality and raising a whole, independent-thinking child, not the one who feels suffocated.
I'm glad you are learning to balance.

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful insights! I completely agree, parenting is about finding that balance and raising independent, confident kids. Appreciate your support!.💜🫂
