Did You Know?
Hi friends, it's your friend again. I welcome you all to the another edition of this publication on this platform. I know you're excited about reading a fresh edition of "Did You Know?" Your regular history content here on Steem4Nigeria. Last week, we looked at the first European country to begin the importation of Africans as slaves.
This week, I had to digress to the present issue because history links the past, connects us to the present and the future. You know a remarkable thing happened in Nigeria yesterday, which was Tuesday 18th March 2025, where a democratically elected government was suspended as a retired Vice-Admiral, Ibokette Ibas (rtd), took over the government of Rivers State as the state Administrator.
This follows a state of emergency declared by the president of Nigeria, President Ahmed Tinubu in a nationwide broadcast.
It should be noted that before the sudden suspension of democratic proceedings in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara was the Executive Governor of the state. According to the report, the Governor, his deputy and the legislators have been suspended for six months.
But then, did you know that this is not the first time this has happened in Nigeria since the country's transition to a democratic government?
Did you know that former President Olusegun Obasanjo suspended democratic government just like that of Rivers State on 18th May 2004 in Plateau State, Nigeria, under the regime of governor Joshua Dariye? And that retired Gen. Chris Ali took over the administration of the state?
However, according to President Tinubu, the state of emergency was declared according to the Nigerian constitution, Section 305 Subsection 3 of the 1999 constitution as amended.
It may be current, but I want us to critically assess the situation on ground in Rivers State and give our input on this matter. I eagerly await your contributions.
Thank you for reading, I remain your historian friend @eveetim.💕 Feel free to make your contributions in the comment, I'll love to hear from you.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
Thank you for sharing your concern about the emergency in a state of Nigeria. We also had national emergency declared by then prime minister Indira Gandhi in the year 1977. Her party lost in successive parlament election first time since independence.
History repeating itself in Nigeria as the same event happened in Nigeria in 2004, repeated again in 2025. I just realized by your comment that it also took place in your country.
Thanks for coming around and reading through.
Welcome 🙏🏾
Thanks so much for dragging me hear. I would love to pour out my mind has it burdens me. However, permit me to be reserve my thoughts until when it's due by saying that "There's no more to the story than what we are hearing"
My keen advice is that considering a full flesh democratic system we are running, The president should call back his actions, meet with the state and institute peace to them.
At the same time, Distinguished Woke, the 001 of Abuja should not be kept very far from this story has he may likely be the foundation in which peace will be built.
That's my humble contribution for now
Your thoughts are reasonable. While discussing with my husband about the situation yesterday, he said since the government has made the declaration that there won't be any reversal. According to him, the words of the king is irreversible whether good or bad, so that he won't be taken for granted some other time. I just hope he will reverse his declaration just as you have observed.
As for Wike, I reserve my comment.
Well, I appreciate your kind comment and observation. Thank you!
I wish I could drop a voice note 😭😭😭
You just triggered me to speak... 🤣 Meanwhile, your husband is very correct in a unitarian system of government and possibly a military system. As for "genuine democracy, I think this is not obtainable.
There is a country"Nigeria"
It is well! Maybe I should bring an update about the political happenings in our country for people to speak their minds. Chai o!🤣
That's thoughtful! I reserve my pleads till then
Thanks for coming around, I'll think about that.
