Introduction

Welcome to my blog friends. It's your historian friend. Last week, I brought to you a little brief about the amalgamation of Nigeria. Today, I have brought you an interesting edition which I know you'll love to read and refresh your memory of history.

Did you know that British influence in the area known as Nigeria began since in the mid 1800s? Even before the Berlin conference of 1884/85?

Before the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, the British had earlier attempted taking over the area known as Lagos, Nigeria in 1861. This was called the annexation of Lagos.

After the attempt in 1861, the British took over the area known as Nigeria today by a foremost British company, the Royal Niger Company (RNC). This was a trading company which was founded and managed by a British merchant or trader, Sir George Taubman Goldie. Goldie actually gave the area to the British government for about £865,000 in 1899. From 1900, the British took over the territory, dividing the area into three, the Southern and Northern protectorates and the Lagos colony.

It is important to note that the British influence in Nigeria began from the mid 1800s to 1960, at the point where Nigeria gained independence.

Bye friends till the next edition of "Did You Know?
