ABOUT THE RHINOCEROS

The rhinoceros is in the class of animals called the 'pachyderms'. They are one of the oldest group of mammals. They range from 5 feet to 8 feet. They are known for their thick but sensitive skins. While some have only one horn, others have two horns. These horns are made up of the same material as the human fingernails. The oldest rhinoceros died at the age of 57.

FEEDING

They are herbivores and therefore feed on leafy materials (herbs). They are always in search of plants and grasses to eat. They eat only during the night and cooler hours of the day.

HABITAT

They can be found in savannahs, deserts, tropical and subtropical grasslands, tropical moist forests.

LIFESPAN

A Rhinoceros lifespan is between 40 to 45 or 50 years. They face the threat of poaching and illegal threat of their horns which may also be the cause of short lifespan.

CHARACTERISTICS

• They communicate with others by leaving piles of dung as messages.

• They are extremely fast despite their size. They can run up to 30 to 40 miles an hour.

• They have very poor eyesight but great sense of smell and hearing. They use this sense of smell and hearing to survive, this is why even though they can't see well, they tend to charge towards where they perceive harm is coming from or where noise is coming from.

• They soak themselves in mud or roll in dust to protect themselves against sunburn and insect bites.

• The rhinoceros are not social animals, but solitary, they tend to avoid each other.

• Their females do not conceive until about six years of age, and the gestation period is 16 months.

• They give birth to only one calf at a time.

• A rhinoceros can stay up to 5 days without water.
