Do It Yourself (Video) ; Repairing A Ceiling-fan

in Steem Kids & Parents15 hours ago

I asked @mesola if I could post repairs as my entry for her DIY contest and she said it was very much welcomed.
So with that, I present to you how I repaired a ceiling fan.

My neighbor complained to me the previous day that almost all the fans in his house we're not working. And since he knew that I can repair Electronics and Electrical appliances, he wanted me to check them out.
There were three actually, but I will only share how I repaired the last one.
The other two did not require much work. The capacitors in both had spoilt. So I changed it and they both worked perfectly, although he told me that he noticed one of the fans was turning faster than the other.
I knew why. The one that turns faster uses a 400volts ,3.0 micro Farads capacitor. While the other uses a 400volts, 2.5 micro Farads capacitor.
You see the variations right?

So, on the main focus, the smaller brown colored fan in his daughter's room.
Since he thought that the other two worked just by changing the capacitors. He didn't wait for me to confirm first, he bought another capacitor for the smaller one.
When I finally checked and confirmed that the capacitor in the smaller one was still good. And that the problem was from inside the fan cabinet. It had to be opened.
And he'll probably sell the new capacitor that he bought 😂😂

First and foremost, I use a tiny flat-head screw driver to loosen the cup screws so I could have access to the AC (Alternating current) wiring and the capacitor.

After that, I loosen the wires and capacitor, then proceeded to opening the cabinet.
I open the cabinet ,and I noticed rust ( chemical reaction of moisture with iron) in and on the bearing. The one above the coil.

The bearing is that circular shaped object holding the rod that's placed in the middle of the coil.
I've done a labelling below , so check for better understanding.

IMG-20250623-WA0009.jpg

S/NName of component
1Bearing
2Coil windings
3Bushings
4Connection panel/ AC in
5steel rod

The bearing under the coils was working perfectly...

About the bearings : Since the fan works on electromagnetism.... When voltage is being supplied into the coil, it cause a rotation of the Bushings holding the coil.
And for a steady and perfect rotation, the use of bearings both under and above the coil is required. Maybe more subsequent times, new inventions would come in.

Now , if the bearing is bad, when you try to rotate the fan with your hands, it refuses to move, it acts stiff. That stiffness is caused be rust in the bearing.
To fix that, I need to either work on the bearing, that's washing it with petrol, adding oil and leaving it to dry. Or
By getting a new one and replacing the old one.

Which do you think I did?

I bought a new one.

So this is me, parking everything up and going to buy the new bearing. We didn't have it around where I lived. So I needed to head over to my friends place who said he had the new one.

I asked him online on Facebook, and he said it was available. So I wore my clothes and left to his place to get it.
3000 naira , he said he'll sell it at that price. No bargaining , that's about 15 steems...

I got there, we successfully removed the old one , this is it;

Then we fixed this new one..
Since there was no one to video us when I was getting help trying to pull out the old bearing, it's not part of the video. But the new bearing is what you see in the image below;

After fixing the new bearing, I coupled it, paid him for the bearing and headed back home...
The video of the fan working, that's rotating is down below..
When I got home, I fixed the blade at neighbors place and took it to his daughter's room to fix it.
I wasn't allowed to record videos there. Privacy reasons 😂😂
But I managed to take a photo;
