They've re-signed KEY players, they've signed some free agents and they had a really good draft too.
Yes I'm a Titans fan so I'm biased, but I definitely honestly feel this way. I love they style of play the Titans are playing and I love their momentum from last season.
Yesterday right before the extension deadline, the Titans and Derrick Henry agreed to 4-year contract worth fifty million dollars and 25.5 million guaranteed! It's a really solid deal that works for both the franchise and Derrick.
The deal only makes Derrick the fifth highest paid running back in the league. It's a bit of a shame because in my opinion Derrick is the best running back in the league. But I know Derrick is a team guy. I also know that Tennessee really doesn't have any income tax. So Derrick is really getting all of his money, which is great.
I know Derrick is a big guy so there is always a risk for bigger guys getting injured. But I also believe his style of play and skillset can perhaps keep him pretty healthy compared to other running backs. With the league getting a little, just a little bit soft and emphasizing speed over strength and power, Derrick is in a position to thrive. Sure sometimes a speedy guy can get to Derrick and tackle him kinda quick. But on the flipside Derrick is not getting smashed out here by that many big guys other than perhaps d-lineman.
Derrick is often the most impressive physical athlete on the field when you combine his speed size and strength. When these little dudes hit him, it really doesn't have the impact on his body that it does for other running backs. Also, Derrick isn't out there catching many passes too often even though I think Derrick can honestly catch well enough.
A lot of people want to criticize Derrick for not being as versatile in the pass game. But his lack of targets in the pass game could help preserve his body that much more. If I'm a Panthers fan I definitely worry about all of those touches Christian McCaffery has been getting. That guy isn't just used in my opinion, he is abused.
As a pure running back, Derrick is the best. When considering all of those things I mentioned, I believe it's possible Derrick could get another solid contract even after this one is up. I sure hope that contract is in Tennessee!!
I like the Titans situation these next couple of years! They locked up both Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry for the next four seasons. The NFL Comeback Player of the Year and the NFL's leading rusher in 2020. The Titans QB + RB combo stays intact. I love our organization and coaching staff. The Titans have a nice receiving core and defense. The team is experienced and as far as I can tell, very hungry.
