Herbal Porridge – Healthy start to the day.

Most of the days I start my day drinking with a warm glass of herbal porridge. It gives me strength to start my day. To prepare this porridge, we use fresh green leaves, rice, water, and coconut milk. As Sri Lankans, we used to drink them over the years.

The fresh leaves we use for preparing porridge are rich with vitamins and minerals. Therefore, it gives us many health benefits, such as mental health, digestive development, and strength. Daily use of the herbal porridge can prevent us from having illnesses.

We use several types of leaves to prepare this porridge. Commonly, we use Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica), curry leaves, Welpenela, and Polpala. We believe that Gotu Kola porridge is beneficial for brain health and memory development. The porridge of curry leaves helps in hair growth and digestion. Welpenela leaves help in blood purification and liver health. Polpala porridge helps protect the urinary system and kidneys. Welpenela leaves help liver health and blood cleaning. Polpala porridge is useful to protect the kidneys and urinary system.


Now let's see how to prepare those herbal porridges.

Ingredients

  • A handful of fresh herbal leaves (Gotu Kola, Curry Leaves, or others)
  • ½ cup of rice (red or white)
  • 1 cup of thick coconut milk
  • Salt as per your taste
  • Water

Method of preparation

First of all, wash the leaves well, then put them in the blender and add some water. After blending, strain the green juice and keep it aside.

Next, cook the rice until it is soft. Next, add coconut milk and cook for a few more minutes. Finally, add the green juice to that mixture and stir well. Don’t forget to cook for a few more minutes in the cooker. Add salt as per your taste and drink warm.
