The second read book of the year is Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. This is not a book that I had in my mind for sometime like many other books I read. However, reading “Mansions on the Moon” made me curious how Lord Buddha and Enlightenment are being portrayed in literature because it is a form where we can explore many areas than idealizing the religious philosophy. Though the book title is Siddhartha, it is not about Prince Siddhartha but a Brahman at the time of Lord Buddha was had his own journey seeking enlightenment.

Siddhartha can be considered as a spiritual and philosophical novel that explores self-discovery, enlightenment, and the search for meaning in life. The story follows Siddhartha, a young man in ancient India, as he embarks on a journey to find ultimate truth and fulfillment. His path takes him from asceticism to material wealth, from spiritual guidance to self-reliance, all in pursuit of inner peace. His journey finally suggests the idea that wisdom cannot be taught—it must be experienced.

The way the writer depicts Siddhartha’s transformation and struggles is both introspective and deeply moving. As a Buddhist, it was not the ending that I expected, however, it deepens your horizons on what can be peace, wisdom and final enlightenment. Therefore, it became a read that lingers in your mind long after you finish it. Siddhartha’s encounters with different walks of life highlight the cyclical nature of learning and personal growth.

It’s a brilliant and thought-provoking addition to my reading, and it has set the bar high for the books to come.

Thanks for reading! See you soon with my third reading of the year!
