12 down, 40 to go!

steemit-quiz-2025-wk12.png

Week 11 was a pleasant change with questions coming from multiple people. I had the pleasure and frustration of trying to answer questions that the guest quiz-masters thought were easy... and turned out to be anything but!

With my priority needing to be on modernising Steemit's Interface, the show can continue without depending upon my constant attention and I hope that you've enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions yourselves - I've included last week's quiz-masters in the beneficiaries for this week's post to show my gratitude.

🌎 Where on Earth? 🛰

Name the country and city shown in this satellite image:
1000050424.jpg

Hint 1:

This is an outpost for steel birds.

Hint 2:

Think of somewhere colder, farther east - once the red heart of an iron dream.

Hint 3:

This city was once a hub for Decembrist exiles (1825 Uprising)

Chita Aerodrom, Russia

52°03'31"N 113°26'32"E

✅ Or Chita Northwest Air Base (Chita - 2) in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia

Last hint did it.

I was hoping it was the last. If not, I wouldn’t know what to say - except maybe it’s a speedy feline…😅

You're making me want to produce more questions like this 😆

Go ahead. But be sure, then you are making me wanna boycott the quiz... ;-)

In my opinion, it was a good and interesting question. You had no reason to worry.

But was too difficult 😅

Hint 2:

Think of somewhere colder, farther east - once the red heart of an iron dream.

Pleeaaeeaase… This is frustrating…
Is it a famous airport/heliport? Is it a city that is known (like Novosibirsk, unfortunately the airport does not match)? Do we know it from the latest news? Or a movie? A song?
I m tired… 😔

You know it from history books... (probably... )
This city was once a hub for Decembrist exiles (1825 Uprising)

Engels-2 Airbase, Russia, Saratov Region, Engels City?

👎You're still too far west. Try moving deeper into Siberia.

It's just that this airfield was recently attacked, so I thought it was the one.

Again? 🫤I thought Trump’s involvement would slow things down...

I hope so too, but for now, it's all just words. We'll see what happens next.

Hint

This is an outpost for steel birds.

Now everything is crystal clear 😁

I hope so. I'll probably give another hint before I go to bed.

Ha ha! Yeah, I think we'd already worked that out 😆

This city was once a hub for Decembrist exiles (1825 Uprising)

Another clue? 😂

I can't see me getting it as things stand - my focus is on coding at the moment so I might not be the best judge today!

This is how things are looking...

{B39E17C5-BE5A-4BB7-B5BE-E6939788806C}.png

... which given there are multiple ways of uploading an image, has turned out to be a massive pain in the arse.

Oh, I think I've seen that image before...🤔

I want to learn that! or I probably shouldn't... I only know the basics ones

my focus is on coding at the moment

image.png

Oh, I think I've seen that image before...🤔

Goodbye

😉

You can't do that yet... I'm working on a feature so that images open in a new tab when they're clicked so that you can see a high res version.

I hope you don't...
image.png

Is it a current satellite image?

The satellite image is quite recent, from mid-2024, but not necessarily taken in 2025. The image was taken from google earth, and the same view still appears unchanged in Google Maps.

Maybe it's some kind of a helicopter squad for firefighting somewhere in Los Angeles, USA?

👎 No, this isn't a firefighting unit in Los Angeles, USA.

I'll give a hint now.

Let's wait for the other players; otherwise, it looks kind of weird—only two people playing, and both are from the same team.

I probably should’ve gone with the horse-drawn carriage on Google Street View instead 😆

When they guess too quickly, even though you put in the effort, it's frustrating... When they can't guess at all, it's just as frustrating, maybe even more. Don't worry, I think your next clue will do the trick.

Haha! Oh, the dilemma...😐

I think your next clue will do the trick.

In an hour

Henry, it seems like we need a hint

There are no guesses yet. You didn't even try 😆 If I give a hint now, it'll be very obvious.

Irkutsk, Russia

👎It's not Irkutsk. But your teammate event-horizon got it. It's Chita, Russia.

Question 2

🔗 Connections 🖇️

What is the connection between the images, why?

IMG_8128.jpeg

Wall

The famous Pink Floyd album The Wall, John Cena starred in the movie The Wall, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, where the Berlin Wall was, and a porcelain tea set, most likely Chinese, where the Great Wall of China is.

✅ Wow, that fast - including perfect explanation!

Question 5

🎥Movie Magic 🎬

❓Guess the movie based on the clues in the picture❓

1000034396.png

Hint 1

The name of the actor playing the main role and the villain's nickname are related to image #2 (they are different people)

Hint 2

The fateful encounter took place on a train similar to the one in image №3

Derailed (2005)

✅ Spot on! That's the right answer!

Should I go ahead and post a question next? 😄

Yes please! I have code on my mind again!

If you have a ready question, that's great!
Let's wait until everyone wakes up; if you ask a question now and I answer it, it might look a bit suspicious, just a little bit 🤏🏻

It's still on my mind. I need to crop pictures first.

This one's gonna be easy. It's not google earth thing 😁

Another one I've never seen 😳

This movie might surprise you. If you decide to watch it, it's best not to look up any information beforehand to preserve the element of surprise.

My list of movies to watch is getting quite long now...

I've just remembered that Reacher Season 3's final episode has been released. That'll be something to talk about tomorrow!

I haven’t watched the Jack Reacher series, only the movies. I should give the series a try.

The Da Vinci Code

👎🏻Unfortunately, this is the wrong answer, but the release years of these movies are very close to each other.

Je ne sais pas 🤷‍♂️

Now I'll give a hint and go to sleep🙂

The Railway Man

👎🏻I'm very sorry, but this is not the right movie.
Now I'll give the second hint and then I'll definitely go to sleep.

I do not know if the three-hour-rule counts after a hint. But if you are sleeping now (as I will in half an hour...) it does not matter. Here is my new guess for the morning:
The English Patient

👎🏻 This is not The English Patient. Henry gave the correct answer—it's Derailed (2005). If you haven't seen this movie, I recommend watching it.

Question 6

🧐 Odd One Out 🚫

These faces all scream the same movie. Who among these characters is the odd one out and why?
odd one out.jpg

Budd is the only male character! 😁 That seems obvious.. so movie wise he’s the only one not killed by The Bride.

👎Really good observation - but not quite what I’m looking for 😁

On second thought, I don't think he's the only one though...

They all are codenamed after a type of snake but Elle Driver’s “California Mountain Snake” is not a venomous as other snakes! 🐍 so she is the odd one out!

✅ Nailed it! In a lineup of lethality, one is biologically bluffing. Elle Driver's the only one codenamed with a nonvenomous snake!

That one was good! 🥂 You guys have a new question.. from me! 😀

Yesss! Bring it on! 😁

I think O-Ren Ishii is the odd one out because she became the mafia boss, while the others are just fighters.

👎I like that reasoning - but nope, not the one 🙂

I will go for Michael Madsen. I don’t know much about them. But find out he is the only one who was born 50s. All others 60s.

👎I didn’t look into that - I’m after something that’s actually in the movie itself.

Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) is the only one who might not have died (or was not confirmed to be dead - just blinded).

👎Not the answer I had in mind, but her ending does say a lot - if you think about what makes her different.

Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) is the only active assassin still working for Bill.

👎Not what I'm after, I’m thinking of something a bit more... intrinsic to her nature.

 yesterday

She is the only one without „honor“ - intrinsically vicious and treacherous.
The other characters adhere to some form of code or respect but Elle is pure badness. Her fate at the end mirrors her moral blindness.

Disconnect got the correct answer. I wasn't thinking about morality but something a bit more biological. Elle Driver is the only one in the Deadly Viper Assasination Squad who's codenamed with a nonvenomous snake.

 yesterday

Rats never sleep... 😉

I held off replying until your waking hours - figured you should have the same thinking window for my clues 🙂

Question 4

📺 Television & Streaming 📺

What connects the below characters from The Simpsons?

They all seem to be former husbands of Selma Bouvier?

✅ That's correct! They have all been married to Selma Bouvier.

Phil Hartman has voiced all these characters (thanks for the names, Alex!) at least once before he died in 1998.

Not at all😉

👎 Is that true? This site disagrees but I must confess that I didn't check who voiced the characters when composing the question.

Yes, two of the characters were only supposed to appear once, when he did the voice (GPT said, after I asked him about the voiceover by Hartman, who I knew was dead). I don't know myself.

Maybe they're all tied together by their strong connection to the past?

Abe Simpson , stuck in the past, always rambling about his youth.

Troy McClure, longs for the glory days when he was a star.

Sideshow Bob, regrets his failures but sometimes mourns his lost dream.

Disco Stu , trapped in the '70s, for him, disco never died.

👎 The answer is much simpler than that 🙂

They’re all fan-favourite side characters who often overshadow the main cast.

👎 They are (I think that every character is!) alexanderkass has the correct answer - they have all been married to Selma Bouvier.

No idea. Never watched a single episode 🤷‍♂️

12 down, 40 to go!

Wow, to see it black on white we still have quite a long way to go from here...

Thank you for the benies, I didn't expect that. I designed the questions for the fun of puzzling, for the fun of tricking the AI. It doesn't always work...
Does it look like I'm ‘working’ for rewards now? I didn't want that (yes, I know, I am a bit starnge and sensible concerning this point...), I just wanted to keep the - really awesome - interaction going. And for that it would be really nice if a few more users would take part in guessing and developing the questions. Seeing the AI runners at the top again and again is a bit frustrating. What do you think (all of you, including participants): Would it make sense if everyone or every team that got a point has to prepare a question next?

Would it make sense if everyone or every team that got a point has to prepare a question next?

Hehe, I just made one. Not sure if it’s too easy or too hard, though. Before switching to a satellite image, I tried a random Google Street View image where you have to guess the country… but unfortunately, ChatGPT nails it every time...

I agree - it’s a great way to step up the game (and the fun), but it’s tough to come up with a question that ChatGPT can’t solve easily.

I just made one

I already saw it and have no idea. No idea how to solve it since I am no Google Earth user. So for me it's too hard without hints. For example, the first thing I thought of was water. Farmed fish ponds or salt pans. Phew, they're everywhere. But it could also be a complex of buildings. Haha, they're everywhere too... You see, I won't be able to solve it...
To be honest, I don't have much time to deal with it either, real life is raging. That's why I won't be able to develop a question that doesn't just pop into my head (like ‘The Wall’ - I could do that in a flash on mobile, but of course it was far too easy...).
And all this tells me that my suggestion is rather suboptimal, because why should others (of the few participants in the quiz) fare differently from me? Nobody will develop a question if they are ‘forced’ to do so.

I already gave a hint. I actually enjoy messing around with google earth as a pastime. :-)

Nobody will develop a question if they are ‘forced’ to do so.

Well, I just did - though not out of obligation. I was just curious to give it a shot. (Honestly, I just like tossing a thumbs down every now and then.) The tricky part is the AI… it made things harder and way more time-consuming than expected - and yes, not many people enjoy that.

real life is raging

Of course, it's the most important thing :-)

The tricky part is the AI… it made things harder and way more time-consuming than expected

Is it mean for me to think "I'm pleased that others are discovering this 🙂"

Only when I tried it myself did I finally understand how complex and time-consuming it is to come up with questions. I can now fully empathize with you 🙂

I'm just loving how this is turning out - the Steemit quiz has become a group effort, with everyone getting a chance to take part in developing the questions themselves.

I finally understand how complex and time-consuming it is to come up with questions

It wouldn't be so bad if ChatGPT didn't exist - but it shortcuts any element of research and has killed more of my questions that you'll have seen.

I'm just loving how this is turning out - the Steemit quiz has become a group effort, with everyone getting a chance to take part in developing the questions themselves.

This change has been a saviour for me. As I've mentioned, I need to prioritise coding now so spend hours creating and testing questions just isn't feasible any more. I used to create questions in batches of 3 so that I'd have some ready but I've not even had a chance to think about them!

I think you've probably also realised why some categories are revisited more frequently than others - as they're much harder for AI to solve.

I need to prioritise coding now

Understandable 🙂 Alex and I talked about this - we'll help with the questions whenever we can. It's not even about the rewards anymore, we just hate it when it's so damn quiet 😄

I saw the hint and looked up for several heli(air)ports. No chance... Someone els has to develop the next question... ;-D

I gave another hint. But of course, I'm waiting for the next question...

Does it look like I'm ‘working’ for rewards now?

Absolutely not! I just want to be fair with the effort going in to questions and this was my way of making it feel fair 🙂

Would it make sense if everyone or every team that got a point has to prepare a question next?

I've thought about this... the only thing that's stopped this is if it becomes a barrier to entry or if others aren't willing to put the same care into asking questions as we do.

Hey @the-gorilla! 😃

I just launched a little something I’ve been building — it’s a lottery app on Steemit that’s fun, fair, and runs daily! 🎉

👉 App Link: Win with Steemit

I’ve sent you 1 STEEM as a gift so you can try it out! Let's see if luck is on your side today 🥂

I've given it a go - Good Luck with the project.

What's the house edge / payout percentage that you're working to?

Thanks! Attracting participants is the challenge to such new game.

After 100 stimulations house edge was below 10% because I'm increasing the Jackpot 10% if not win by anyone.

How was it, any ideas from your side?

The process was simple enough.

My main suggestion would be to implement KeyChain so that when I submit my numbers, I don't need to manually do the transfer from my wallet - it's done automatically.

Attracting participants is the challenge to such new game.

I think that anything of this nature will be difficult to attract users. People are quite free with their votes because there isn't a feeling of paying something - but generally people are reluctant to transfer STEEM to enter games or lotteries, etc. xpilar will be able to give an idea about how much demand there is - he's tried a few similar ideas over the years.

I agree! integrating KeyChain could definitely improve the user experience. I will try to do that in future, I also believe it’s important to keep wallet transfers as an alternative, because granting access through extensions like KeyChain can feel intimidating to new users.

At the moment, I'm facing a few challenges with fetching transaction data reliably from Steemit. I’m using the method condenser_api.get_account_history, but it seems to work inconsistently sometimes it fetches, other times it doesn’t. I’m actively looking into more stable solutions for this. If you know any thing that can help me please let me know.

And yes, I do remember that xpilar ran a lottery a while back, but it had to be shut down due to low participation. For this project to be sustainable especially with the costs (hosting and backend infrastructure) I think I’ll need at least 100+ active participants per day. Otherwise my option also would be to shut this down 🤔

If you know any thing that can help me please let me know.

Have you tried any of steemchiller's APIs?

https://sds.steemworld.org/transfers_api

There should be something here that'll be easy to use and reliable. It won't broadcast but it's quicker than Steemit's APIs for retrieving data.

I think I’ll need at least 100+ active participants per day

I'm not convinced there are that many engaged users on the platform, let alone enough to be willing to risk their STEEM on a lottery.

God bless you

👍🏻😅👍🏻😅👍🏻😅👍🏻😅👍🏻😅👍🏻😅👍🏻😅

Thank you very much @the-gorilla, I was very surprised that you included me in the distribution of benefits.
