I cannot give any useful answers on many of your points, but generally...

• The more you power-up, the more you can earn from curating posts assuming you vote regularly.

• In terms of contests and challenges you don't need to just wait for the ones organised by Steemit, @disconnect lists almost a hundred contests organised by the community in his daily compilation.

• In Steem Atlas we review and moderate every single post (although we do have a backlog of a few days at the moment).
